Overview

An 800 x 450 mm (31.5 x 17.7 in) table over 610 mm (24.0 in) of X travel is the unusual feature of the Colchester Storm VL-610. The table is almost a third longer than the stroke beneath it. This linear-guideway vertical machining centre travels 460 mm (18.1 in) in Y and 510 mm (20.1 in) in Z, and runs a BT40 spindle at 10,000 rpm on 11 kW (14.8 hp).

A table that overhangs the travel has practical uses. Clamps, stops and a tool setter can sit outside the cutting zone, and a second vice can stay bolted down between jobs. The trade is load: the table is rated for 400 kg (882 lb). The box-way Storm VH-610 has an identical table and travels and is rated for 800 kg (1,764 lb), so the choice between them comes down to what goes on the table and how hard it is cut.

Colchester positions the VL series as the high-speed half of the Storm range, pairing the spindle with linear guideways for acceleration. For aluminium housings, plates and brackets that fill a 610 mm (24.0 in) stroke, that is the better fit. Spindle nose to table distance is 125 - 630 mm (4.9 - 24.8 in), the lowest starting point in the range, which helps when short tools must reach a low fixture. The table has 3 T-slots of 18 mm (0.7 in). A 24-tool twin arm changer is fitted.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 800 x 450 mm (31.5 x 17.7 in) table, considerably longer than the 610 mm (24.0 in) X travel
  • Spindle nose comes down to 125 mm (4.9 in) above the table
  • BT40 spindle, 10,000 rpm and 11 kW (14.8 hp)
  • Twin arm tool changer with 24 tools

Limitations

  • 400 kg (882 lb) table load, half that of the Storm VH-610
  • Only 3 T-slots across the table
  • Feed rates, rapids and positioning accuracy are not stated on the page

Best For

Aluminium plates, housings and brackets up to 610 mm (24.0 in) long Two-vice setups with tooling parked outside the stroke Light, fast milling where acceleration matters more than cutting force

Frequently Asked Questions

01 How big is the working area of the Storm VL-610?

X travel is 610 mm (24.0 in), Y travel 460 mm (18.1 in) and Z travel 510 mm (20.1 in). The table is 800 x 450 mm (31.5 x 17.7 in) with 3 T-slots of 18 mm (0.7 in). Distance from spindle nose to table surface is 125 - 630 mm (4.9 - 24.8 in).

02 How much weight can the table carry?

The maximum table load is 400 kg (882 lb). Add up the vices or fixture, any rotary table and the workpiece before committing a job. If the total is higher, the Storm VH-610 carries 800 kg (1,764 lb) on a table of the same size.

03 Is the Storm VL-610 bigger than the Storm VL-550?

Yes, in each axis and in the table. The Storm VL-550 has 550 mm (21.7 in) of X travel and a 600 x 320 mm (23.6 x 12.6 in) table rated for 350 kg (772 lb). Spindle, tool changer and control options are the same on both.

04 What options does Colchester list?

Tool setting and component probing, through spindle coolant, a 4th and 5th axis rotary or tilting table, mist extraction, an oil skimmer and a swarf conveyor. A coolant wash down and air clean down gun are part of the standard machine.
