Overview

The DMG Mori NVX 5060 2nd Generation is a box-way vertical machining center that slots between the compact NVX 5040 and the larger NVX 5080. With 600 x 530 x 510 mm (23.6 x 20.9 x 20.1 in) of travel, it delivers the vibration damping advantages of hardened box ways in a mid-size work envelope suitable for precision mold, die, and production work.

The NVX 5060 offers two spindle configurations: a No. 40 taper speedMASTER spindle optimized for high-speed machining of aluminum and non-ferrous materials, and a No. 50 taper powerMASTER spindle for heavy-duty cutting in steel, cast iron, and titanium. The BT 40 version delivers 12,000 RPM with 11 kW (14.7 hp) continuous, while the BT 50 version runs 10,000 RPM with 22 kW (29.5 hp) for substantially more cutting force.

Rapid traverse runs at 36 m/min (1,417 ipm) on all axes — the expected tradeoff for box-way rigidity versus roller-guide speed. The table handles workpieces up to 900 mm (35.4 in) long, 600 mm (23.6 in) wide, and 510 mm (20.1 in) tall, with a maximum table load of 800 kg (1,764 lb). The 30-tool arm-type ATC delivers 1.8-second chip-to-chip tool changes.

DMG Mori's thermal compensation system monitors displacement at multiple points and adjusts in real time. Box ways on all three axes provide superior damping during interrupted cuts and heavy roughing passes. Control is the FANUC 0i-MF Plus with MAPPS interface. The machine is built in Japan and carries DMG Mori's global service support.

New NVX 5060 machines price between $155,000 and $210,000. The NVX 5060 competes with the Okuma GENOS M460-V-e, Makino S33, and other mid-size box-way VMCs. Its 600 mm X-travel positions it for shops that need box-way rigidity on parts too large for compact VMCs but don't require the full 800 mm travel of the NVX 5080. Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Box ways on all three axes deliver superior vibration damping for heavy interrupted cuts in steel, cast iron, and titanium
  • Dual spindle options — BT 40 speedMASTER for high-speed work and BT 50 powerMASTER for heavy-duty cutting — let you match the machine to your workload
  • 800 kg table load supports substantial workpieces while maintaining the accuracy benefits of box-way construction
  • Ceramic hybrid bearings in the integral spindle minimize thermal growth during extended production runs
  • 600 mm X-travel provides a well-balanced work envelope that covers most mid-size mold and production parts
  • 30-tool standard ATC with 60-tool option supports high-mix production without constant manual tool loading

Limitations

  • 36 m/min rapids are slower than roller-guide competitors, adding cycle time on parts with extensive positioning moves
  • 11 kW continuous power on the BT 40 version is modest — shops doing heavy roughing should strongly consider the BT 50 variant
  • Box ways require periodic re-scraping to maintain accuracy over the machine's service life, adding long-term maintenance cost
  • 600 mm X-travel is tight for larger mold bases — the NVX 5080 at 800 mm may be needed for bigger work
05

Best For

Mold and die shops where surface finish quality and vibration damping during finish passes justify the box-way premium Production shops machining steel, cast iron, and stainless parts where damping directly affects tool life and surface quality Precision job shops holding tolerances under +/-0.005 mm consistently across production runs Shops stepping up from entry-level VMCs that want the accuracy and rigidity of a premium Japanese-built platform Medical and aerospace component shops cutting titanium and Inconel requiring stable heavy-duty roughing

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What does a new DMG Mori NVX 5060 cost?

New NVX 5060 machines start around $155,000 for the BT 40 version. The BT 50 variant runs $180,000-$210,000 depending on options. Through-spindle coolant, expanded ATC, and probing add to the price. Used units from 2015-2020 sell for $75,000-$120,000.

02 NVX 5060 vs NVX 5080 — which should I buy?

The NVX 5060 has 600 mm X-travel and 800 kg table load. The NVX 5080 steps up to 800 mm X-travel and 700 kg table load with a larger table. If your parts fit within 600 mm, the 5060 saves money. If you regularly machine larger mold bases or plates, the 5080 is worth the premium.

03 speedMASTER vs powerMASTER — which spindle do I need?

The BT 40 speedMASTER is for shops doing mostly aluminum, brass, and mild steel with higher RPM and lighter cuts. The BT 50 powerMASTER provides double the power (22 kW vs 11 kW) for production work in hardened steel, cast iron, and titanium. The BT 50 costs more but delivers significantly more cutting force.

04 How does the NVX 5060 compare to the Okuma GENOS M460-V-e?

Both are box-way VMCs in the same class. The Okuma offers its Thermo-Friendly Concept and OSP control. The DMG Mori counters with MAPPS interface and ceramic hybrid spindle bearings. Both are excellent machines — the decision often comes down to control preference (FANUC vs OSP) and local dealer support.
