Overview

On the AWEA VP-4012 the X axis rapids no faster than it cuts. Both figures are 10 m/min (394 ipm), over 4,000 mm (157.5 in) of X travel. That single line of the table tells a buyer what kind of machine this is: a long bed for long workpieces, where time is spent in the cut and not in repositioning.

The rest of the envelope matches the narrower VP frame. Y travel is 1,200 mm (47.2 in) and Z is 760 mm (29.9 in), with 1,300 mm (51.2 in) between the columns. Y and Z keep their quicker rapids, 24 m/min (945 ipm) and 20 m/min (787 ipm). The table is 4,000 x 1,100 mm (157.5 x 43.3 in) and takes 6,000 kg (13,228 lb).

A bed of this length is often run as two stations. One fixture is machined at the left end while the operator loads another at the right, and the slow X rapid matters little because the head seldom crosses the whole table. If a job does need frequent end-to-end moves, compare the SP-4016, whose X rapid is 15,000 mm/min (591 ipm) on the same 4,000 mm stroke.

Accuracy in X is 0.02 mm for positioning and 0.014 mm for repeatability. The 6,000 rpm gear spindle has a BT50 taper and an 11 / 15 kW (14.8 / 20.1 hp) motor. Machine weight is 24,000 kg (52,910 lb), so foundation planning belongs in the purchase.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 4,000 mm (157.5 in) of X travel with a table of the same length
  • 6,000 kg (13,228 lb) table load, up from 4,500 kg (9,921 lb) on the VP-3012
  • Long enough to split into two work stations along X
  • Y rapid of 24 m/min (945 ipm) and Z rapid of 20 m/min (787 ipm) are unchanged from the short models
  • Same 40 kVA power requirement as the smaller VP machines

Limitations

  • X rapid is only 10 m/min (394 ipm); the VP-3012 moves at 20 m/min (787 ipm)
  • Cutting feed rate is capped at 10 m/min (394 ipm)
  • X positioning accuracy of 0.02 mm and repeatability of 0.014 mm
  • An 11 / 15 kW (14.8 / 20.1 hp) spindle motor on a 24,000 kg (52,910 lb) machine
  • Table width stays at 1,100 mm however long the bed gets
06

Best For

Long structural parts close to 4,000 mm Pendulum loading with a fixture at each end of the table Rows of smaller parts machined in one long setup Heavy plates up to 6,000 kg (13,228 lb)

Frequently Asked Questions

01 Why is the X rapid of the VP-4012 so much lower than on the VP-3012?

AWEA's table simply lists it that way: 10 m/min (394 ipm) for the VP-4012 against 20 m/min (787 ipm) for the VP-3012. The maker gives no reason on the page. What a buyer can take from it is that long X moves on this machine run at feed speed, so cycle estimates should count repositioning time.

02 How much weight does the VP-4012 table hold?

6,000 kg (13,228 lb), spread over a 4,000 x 1,100 mm (157.5 x 43.3 in) surface. The VP-5012 goes to 8,000 kg (17,637 lb). The table is described by AWEA as rib reinforced.

03 What is the wider alternative to the VP-4012?

Inside the VP series there is none at this length: the 1,600 mm (63.0 in) Y models end with the VP-3016. The SP-4016 pairs 4,000 mm (157.5 in) of X with 1,600 mm of Y, a 4,200 x 1,500 mm (165.4 x 59.1 in) table and a 12,000 kg (26,455 lb) load rating.

04 Does the VP-4012 share its tool magazine with the shorter models?

Yes. It is listed with 32 tools, optionally 24 or 40, and the same limits: Ø125 mm (Ø4.9 in), or Ø229 mm (Ø9.0 in) next to empty pockets, 350 mm (13.8 in) in length and 15 kg (33 lb) per tool.

05 Is there a faster-spindle version of this size?

The VP-4012HS has the same travels, table load and 24,000 kg (52,910 lb) weight with a direct-driven spindle at 10,000 rpm and 22 / 26 kW (29.5 / 34.9 hp). Its X rapid is also 10 m/min (394 ipm), so the change is in the spindle, not in axis speed.
