Overview
A No.50 spindle over a table that is nearly as wide as it is long: that is the Johnford DMC-2100SH. X travel is 2,100 mm (82.7 in), Y is 1,778 mm (70 in) and Z is 800 mm (31.5 in). The spindle takes BT-50 / CAT-50 tooling, runs on a 90 mm (3.5 in) bearing and is driven by a 22 / 26 kW (29.5 / 34.9 hp) motor through a Hi Lo Gear.
That motor is the first thing to notice. Johnford fits 15 / 18.5 kW (20.1 / 24.8 hp) to the DMC-2100H on the narrower frame, so the S frame brings a stronger geared drive along with the extra width. Standard speed is 6,000 rpm. For lighter, faster work there are two built-in spindles, 26 / 31 kW (34.9 / 41.6 hp) or 31 / 40 kW (41.6 / 53.6 hp), at 10,000 rpm.
Heavy tooling is the reason to pick the SH over the 40-taper DMC-2100S. The changer accepts 15 kg (33 lb) tools up to 400 mm (15.7 in) long. Diameter is Ø125 mm (Ø5 in) with every pocket full and Ø200 mm (Ø7.8 in) when the neighbours are left empty, enough for large face mills and boring bars.
The table is 2,200 x 1,500 mm (86.6 x 59 in) and carries 10,000 kg (22,000 lb). Footprint is 6,633 x 4,600 x 3,883 mm (261.1 x 181.1 x 152.9 in). Coolant through the spindle is not standard: the base machine has a 2 bar external supply with spindle nozzles, and the 20 bar through-spindle system is an option.
