Overview

The You Ji VMC850 is a BT-40 vertical machining center with box guide ways on all three axes and travels of 850 x 600 x 600 mm (33.5 x 23.6 x 23.6 in). It is the smallest of the VMC series and the base from which You Ji derives its VTM and VLM linear-way versions.

Box ways are the reason to pick it over those versions. You Ji's own notes say the box guideway design provides high rigidity, and sliding ways damp an interrupted cut in steel or cast iron better than rolling ones. A dual speed gearbox is offered as an option for heavy cutting. Without it the spindle is listed at 8,000 rpm.

The table measures 1,000 x 550 mm (39.4 x 21.7 in), longer than the X travel, so a vise at each end stays inside the stroke only if the work is kept toward the middle. Y and Z are both 600 mm (23.6 in). With the spindle nose 100-700 mm (3.9-27.6 in) above the table, a tall fixture plus a long drill still clears.

An umbrella type ATC is standard, and an arm-type ATC is an option on this model. Other items in the maker's list are C3 level ballscrews, a fully enclosed guard, an auto-lube system for ways and screws, and an oil skimmer. The catalogue table does not give tool count, spindle power, rapid rates or table load for the VMC850.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Box guide ways on X, Y and Z for rigidity in heavy and interrupted cuts
  • 600 mm (23.6 in) of Y and of Z travel on an 850 mm (33.5 in) X machine
  • Arm-type ATC available in place of the standard umbrella type ATC
  • Optional dual speed gearbox for heavy cutting
  • Spindle nose to table of 100-700 mm (3.9-27.6 in) leaves room for tall fixtures

Limitations

  • 8,000 rpm spindle limits small-tool work in aluminium
  • Tool capacity, spindle power and rapid traverse rate are not in the published table
  • Machine stands 3,030 mm (119.3 in) high, which rules out low-ceiling shops
  • Shortest X travel in the series; the VMC1100 has 1,100 mm (43.3 in) on the same Y and Z

Best For

Steel and cast-iron parts that load the ways, such as mould bases and fixtures Plate and block work inside 850 x 600 mm (33.5 x 23.6 in) Shops that prefer box ways to linear guides for roughing

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What are the travels of the VMC850?

X-axis travel is 850 mm (33.5 in), Y-axis travel 600 mm (23.6 in) and Z-axis travel 600 mm (23.6 in). The table is 1,000 x 550 mm (39.4 x 21.7 in) and the distance from spindle nose to table is 100-700 mm (3.9-27.6 in).

02 How does the VMC850 differ from the VTM850 and VLM850?

In the guide ways only, as far as the catalogue shows. VMC has box guide ways on X, Y and Z. VTM has linear guide ways on X and Y with a box way on Z. VLM has linear guide ways on all three. Travels, table, BT-40 taper and 8,000 rpm are the same in the table.

03 What tool changer does it have?

You Ji lists an umbrella type ATC system, with an arm-type ATC as an option on the VMC850 and VMC1100. The number of tools is not printed in the catalogue table, so confirm it for the changer you choose.

04 How much room does the VMC850 need?

Floor space is 2,450 x 3,780 mm (96.5 x 148.8 in) and machine height is 3,030 mm (119.3 in). The VMC1100 has the same 2,450 mm width and height but is 4,180 mm (164.6 in) in the other direction.
