Overview
The Haas VF-14/40 is the flagship of the large VF 40-taper lineup. It combines 3,810 mm (150 in) of X-travel with 1,016 mm (40 in) of Y and 762 mm (30 in) of Z, giving you the maximum work envelope available in a Haas 40-taper vertical machining center. If you're machining parts that are both long and wide, this is the end of the line before you move to a 50-taper or horizontal boring mill.
The spindle is the same 22.4 kW (30 hp) inline direct-drive unit used across the entire large VF/40 range. It tops out at 8,100 RPM with 122 Nm (90 ft-lbf) of torque at 2,000 RPM and an optional gearbox that pushes torque to 339 Nm (250 ft-lbf) at 450 RPM. Tooling options include CT40, BT40, and HSK-A63.
The 3,810 x 711 mm (150 x 28 in) T-slot table stretches 12.5 feet with 5 T-slots on 125 mm centers and a 1,814 kg (4,000 lb) load capacity. The combination of 150-inch X and 40-inch Y opens up fixturing possibilities that no other Haas VMC can match: full-length structural parts, multiple tombstones in line, or wide mold bases positioned anywhere along the table.
Rapid traverse on X runs at 9.1 m/min (360 ipm), with Y and Z at 15.2 m/min (600 ipm). The SMTC holds 30+1 tools (50+1 optional) with 2.8-second tool-to-tool and 3.6-second chip-to-chip times. At 16,466 kg (36,300 lb), the VF-14/40 shares its weight with the VF-12/40, indicating the same base casting with the wider Y-axis saddle.
Starting at around $392,000, the VF-14/40 is a significant capital expenditure. But compared to a Mazak VTC-800 or an Okuma MCR-A5CII with similar travels, the Haas still undercuts on price while offering the familiar NGC control and HFO service network. For shops that need every inch of this envelope, the VF-14/40 is the most cost-effective way to get there in a 40-taper format. Specs sourced from Haas Automation published data.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- Maximum work envelope in the Haas 40-taper lineup: 150 inches of X with 40 inches of Y
- 150 x 28-inch table with 4,000 lb load capacity handles the largest parts Haas can accommodate in a VMC
- 16,466 kg (36,300 lb) machine weight provides the rigidity needed for heavy cuts across the full travel span
- Still significantly less expensive than competing long-bed machines from Mazak, Okuma, or DMG Mori
- SMTC with 30+1 (or optional 50+1) capacity and full upgraded standard features package
- Same NGC control and HFO service network as every other Haas machine for familiar operation
Limitations
- At $392,000, this is the most expensive machine in the standard VF/40 catalog
- X-axis rapids at 9.1 m/min (360 ipm) add significant cycle time on long traverse moves
- 8,100 RPM max spindle limits high-speed aluminum work; no SS variant at this frame size
- 29-foot shipping pallet and 36,300 lb weight require major rigging logistics
- 5 T-slots may feel limiting given the wide 40-inch Y-travel; a wider table would benefit from more slots

Frequently Asked Questions
01
Yes. The VF-14/40 offers the maximum travel in the Haas 40-taper VMC lineup: 150 x 40 x 30 inches. For larger work envelopes, you would need to move to a gantry-style machine, horizontal boring mill, or a different manufacturer's platform.
02
Both share identical 150-inch X-travel and the same spindle. The VF-14/40 adds 8 inches of Y (40 vs 32 in) for about $44,000 more at $392K vs $348K. Machine weight is the same at 36,300 lb. If you can work within 32 inches of Y, the VF-12/40 saves money.
03
A minimum 8-inch thick concrete floor is recommended for the 36,300 lb machine weight. The footprint with clearances requires roughly 35 x 16 feet of floor space. Ceiling height should accommodate the machine height of approximately 11 feet.
04
Yes, but the slower X-axis rapids at 360 ipm mean cycle times will be longer for parts requiring frequent long traverses. The 30+1 SMTC, 95-gallon coolant tank, and optional automation provisions support extended production runs. For true high-volume work on long parts, consider whether a gantry or traveling-column machine might be more efficient.
