Overview
The Haas VM-12/50 combines the longest travel in the Haas VMC range with its most powerful mold-machine spindle: 3,810 x 813 x 762 mm (150 x 32 x 30 in) of envelope, and 60 hp producing 475 Nm (350 ft-lbf) at 700 RPM through a 50-taper nose.
That pairing is aimed at one job in particular, which is roughing very long tooling in hard material. Extrusion dies, press tooling and long forming dies get roughed with big face mills and heavy radial engagement, and a 40-taper spindle simply doesn't have the torque to do it at sensible feed rates. At 150 inches of length, the number of shops that need this exact combination is small, but for them there isn't much else at the price.
US$463,995 is what Haas lists. Comparable capability from a bridge-mill builder generally starts well above US$700,000, and used equipment at this length tends to be old enough that control and spindle refurbishment is part of the deal.
What to watch: rapids stay at 360 ipm, which over 150 inches is the slowest effective repositioning in the range, and the 10,000 RPM ceiling rules out fine finishing with small tools. This machine roughs long and heavy. Plan to finish detail somewhere else.
