Overview

The Johnford DMC-900 is the smallest double column machining center in Johnford's DMC series: 900 x 900 x 762 mm (35.43 x 35.43 x 30 in) of travel with 1,060 mm (41.7 in) between the columns and a BT-40 / CAT-40 spindle. The table moves in X beneath a fixed bridge, and it is rated for 3,000 kg (6,600 lb).

It should not be confused with the DMC-909. Both have 900 mm of X and Y and a 1,000 x 850 mm (39.4 x 33.5 in) table, but the DMC-909 is a 15,000 rpm mold machine with 500 mm (19.7 in) of Z. The DMC-900 is the general-purpose design. It has 762 mm (30 in) of Z, a spindle nose range of 150~912 mm (5.9~35.9 in), and a geared spindle: the motor row reads 7.5 / 11 kW (10.1 / 14.8 hp) Hi Lo Gear, with a 17 / 20 kW (22.8 / 26.8 hp) built-in spindle as the alternative.

The speed row needs reading with care. Johnford prints 8,000 rpm first, marks 10,000/12,000 rpm as optional, and puts 15,000, 18,000 and 20,000 rpm on a second line that corresponds to the built-in spindle. The accessory list confirms that the 15,000 to 20,000 rpm built-in spindle is an HSK A63 option.

Unlike Johnford's C-frame machines, the DMC-900 has an arm type tool changer as standard, with 24 tools; 32, 40 and 60-tool magazines are optional. Chip removal is by two screw type conveyors and one chain type conveyor with trolley. The machine weighs 10,000 kg (22,000 lb) and stands 3,780 mm (148.8 in) high, which is the dimension most likely to cause trouble in an existing building.

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What type of machine is the Johnford DMC-900?

A double column machining center with a moving table. The distance between columns is 1,060 mm (41.7 in), travels are 900 x 900 x 762 mm (35.43 x 35.43 x 30 in), and the table is 1,000 x 850 mm (39.4 x 33.5 in).

02 What spindle speeds does the DMC-900 offer?

The table lists 8,000 rpm, with 10,000/12,000 rpm marked as optional, and 15,000, 18,000 or 20,000 rpm for the built-in spindle. The optional accessory list names the 15,000 to 20,000 rpm built-in spindle as HSK A63.

03 What is the difference between the DMC-900 and the DMC-900H?

The DMC-900H is the No.50 version: BT-50 / CAT-50, a 15 / 18.5 kW (20.1 / 24.8 hp) Hi Lo Gear drive, a 90 mm (3.5 in) spindle bearing diameter and 15 kg (33 lb) tools. The DMC-900 is No.40 with a 70 mm (2.8 in) bearing diameter. Travels, table and weight are the same.

04 How much does the DMC-900 weigh?

10,000 kg (22,000 lb). Its dimensions are 4,000 x 3,250 x 3,780 mm (157.5 x 128 x 148.8 in), and foundation bolts and levelling pads are included as standard accessories.
