Overview

The Johnford DMC-2100S is the shortest machine on the maker's wide double column frame, the one with 1,796 mm (70.7 in) between the columns. Travels are 2,100 x 1,778 x 800 mm (82.7 x 70 x 31.5 in) over a 2,200 x 1,500 mm (86.6 x 59 in) table, and the spindle is BT-40 / CAT-40 with HSK A63 as an option.

What the S frame buys is width. The DMC-2100 on the narrower frame has almost the same X, 2,050 mm (80.7 in), but only 1,300 mm (51.2 in) of Y and a 6,000 kg (13,200 lb) table. Here the table takes 10,000 kg (22,000 lb), so a plate close to square can be clamped flat and reached edge to edge.

Spindle choice decides what the machine is for. The base drive is 7.5 / 11 kW (10.1 / 14.8 hp) through a Hi Lo Gear at 8,000 rpm, which suits general plate work. The built-in spindle is 18.5 / 23 kW (24.8 / 30.8 hp), and the table lists 15,000, 18,000 and 20,000 rpm as options, the speeds asked for when finishing mould surfaces with small ball-nose cutters. Only this model and the DMC-2600S carry that high-speed row among the S machines.

Rapids are 12 / 12 / 12 m/min (472 / 472 / 472 ipm), modest for a 40-taper machine, and cutting feed tops out at 10,000 mm/min (394 ipm). A 24-tool arm type changer, full enclosure and a Fanuc 0i-MF PLUS control are standard. The machine weighs 22,800 kg (50,220 lb).

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 1,778 mm (70 in) of Y travel on a machine only 2,100 mm (82.7 in) long in X
  • Table load of 10,000 kg (22,000 lb), against 6,000 kg (13,200 lb) on the DMC-2100
  • Optional built-in spindle of 18.5 / 23 kW (24.8 / 30.8 hp) with 15,000, 18,000 or 20,000 rpm
  • Full enclosure, 24-tool arm type ATC and three chip conveyors are standard accessories

Limitations

  • The geared base spindle is 7.5 / 11 kW (10.1 / 14.8 hp), light for a machine of 22,800 kg (50,220 lb)
  • Rapid traverse is 12 / 12 / 12 m/min (472 / 472 / 472 ipm), slower than the 15 / 15 / 12 m/min (591 / 591 / 472 ipm) of the DMC-2100
  • Tools are limited to 10 kg (22 lb) and Ø75 mm (Ø3 in) with neighbouring pockets filled
  • Linear scales and through-spindle coolant at 20 bar are options

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What does the S in DMC-2100S stand for in practice?

The wider frame. The DMC-2100S has 1,796 mm (70.7 in) between columns and 1,778 mm (70 in) of Y travel, where the DMC-2100 has 1,300 mm (51.2 in) for both. The table grows from 2,200 x 1,100 mm (86.6 x 43.3 in) on the DMC-2100 to 2,200 x 1,500 mm (86.6 x 59 in).

02 Which spindle speeds can the DMC-2100S be ordered with?

8,000 rpm is the base speed with the Hi Lo Gear drive. 10,000 and 12,000 rpm are listed as options, and 15,000, 18,000 and 20,000 rpm are options that the accessory list ties to the HSK A63 built-in spindle.

03 How tall a part fits under the spindle of the DMC-2100S?

The distance from spindle nose to table runs from 150 to 950 mm (5.9~37.4 in), with 800 mm (31.5 in) of Z travel. Tool length, up to 320 mm (12.6 in), comes off that daylight.

04 Which control does the DMC-2100S come with?

A Fanuc 0i-MF PLUS with a 10.4 in LCD and Manual Guide i is the standard control. Siemens SINUMERIK 828D, Fanuc 31i-MB PLUS and Siemens SINUMERIK ONE are listed as options, and the maker says Fagor or Mitsubishi controllers are also available.
