Price estimate
We do not have a price for the TRAK VMC2 that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
The TRAK VMC2 is a 30 Taper vertical machining center on a footprint of 30.5 x 52 in (775 x 1,321 mm), with 14 x 12 x 17 in (356 x 305 x 432 mm) of travel, an 8-tool carrier and the ProtoTRAK RMX CNC.
Two things make it easy to place. The first is size: 2,825 lbs net (1,281 kg), with a table of 18 x 15 in (457 x 381 mm). The second is power. Besides 208V three-phase at 23.9A, TRAK lists a 208V single-phase supply at 23.9A, and 480V three-phase at 16A with the transformer option. A single-phase option is what lets a machine like this go into a building with no three-phase service.
The spindle takes BT 30 holders and is rated 4.5 hp (3.4 kW) peak / 3 hp (2.2 kW) continuous. Its speed range depends on the operating mode: 50 - 10,000 rpm in Production Ops and 50 - 5,000 rpm in Toolroom Ops. Rapids follow the same split, 600 ipm (15.2 m/min) in Production Ops and 400 ipm (10.2 m/min) in Toolroom Ops. With this power the machine is suited to small cutters at high speed, not large face mills.
Tooling limits are tight and worth checking against the job. The carrier holds 8 tools, each up to 2 in (51 mm) in diameter and 8 lbs (4 kg) including the holder, and changes in 1.2 - 1.4 sec from front to back. Clamping force is 850 - 1,000 lbs (386 - 454 kg) at 90 psi.
Z travel, at 17 in (432 mm), is longer than X, and the spindle nose can sit from 2.75 in (70 mm) to 20.25 in (514 mm) above the table. The table carries 500 lbs (227 kg). Overall height is 93 in (2,362 mm) minimum and 101.5 in (2,578 mm) with the head fully up.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- Footprint of 30.5 x 52 in (775 x 1,321 mm) and 2,825 lbs net (1,281 kg)
- Can run on 208V single phase at 23.9A, as well as 208V three-phase
- 50 - 10,000 rpm in Production Ops on a BT 30 spindle
- 17 in (432 mm) of Z travel, more than its 14 in (356 mm) of X
- 8-tool carrier with a 1.2 - 1.4 sec change from front to back
Limitations
- 4.5 hp (3.4 kW) peak / 3 hp (2.2 kW) continuous limits cutter size and depth of cut
- Only 8 tools, each no more than 2 in (51 mm) in diameter and 8 lbs (4 kg) with holder
- Table load is 500 lbs (227 kg), against 880 lbs (399 kg) on the 40 Taper TMC5
- Travels of 14 x 12 x 17 in (356 x 305 x 432 mm) rule out all but small parts
- Spindle speed is 50 - 5,000 rpm and rapids 400 ipm (10.2 m/min) when running in Toolroom Ops
