Overview

The AWEA VP-1612 is the shortest machine of the VP bridge-type range: 1,600 mm (63.0 in) of X travel, 1,200 mm (47.2 in) of Y and 760 mm (29.9 in) of Z, over a table of 1,600 x 1,100 mm (63.0 x 43.3 in). It carries a BT50 gear spindle that runs to 6,000 rpm, and it weighs 14,000 kg (30,864 lb).

Why pick a bridge machine at an X stroke this modest? The reason is the Y axis. The head rides a cross beam between two columns set 1,300 mm (51.2 in) apart, and the table moves in X only. Y travel is longer than the table is wide, so the cutter reaches both long edges of a plate that fills the table.

Nothing on this size is slowed by length. X and Y both rapid at 24 m/min (945 ipm), Z at 20 m/min (787 ipm), and the cutting feed rate is 12 m/min (472 ipm). The X axis holds the same 0.012 mm positioning accuracy as Y and Z, with X repeatability of 0.008 mm. Further up the range those X figures loosen and the rapid falls, so the short machine is the one to look at when the part fits.

Being small shows in the table rating, 3,000 kg (6,614 lb), the lowest in the series. The spindle motor is 11 / 15 kW (14.8 / 20.1 hp). AWEA casts the bridge and base in one piece, hand scrapes the contact surfaces, and puts linear guide ways on X and Y with a hardened, ground box way on Z.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • X rapid of 24 m/min (945 ipm), equal to Y; no length penalty on this size
  • X positioning accuracy of 0.012 mm and repeatability of 0.008 mm, the tightest X figures the VP table shows
  • 1,200 mm (47.2 in) of Y over a 1,100 mm wide table, so the full width of the table is inside the stroke
  • At 14,000 kg (30,864 lb) it is the lightest VP model to move and to found
  • BT50 gear spindle to 6,000 rpm, with BBT50 as an option

Limitations

  • Table load of 3,000 kg (6,614 lb) is the lowest in the series; the VP-2012 takes 3,500 kg (7,716 lb)
  • Spindle motor is 11 / 15 kW (14.8 / 20.1 hp), where the VP-1612HS on the same travels has 22 / 26 kW (29.5 / 34.9 hp)
  • 6,000 rpm top speed limits small cutters and finishing passes in aluminium
  • Tools are capped at 15 kg (33 lb) and 350 mm (13.8 in) in length

Best For

Mold bases and die plates up to about 1,600 x 1,100 mm Steel and cast iron parts under 3,000 kg (6,614 lb) Wide plates that need full-width access in Y Shops moving up from a C-frame vertical to a first bridge mill

Frequently Asked Questions

01 How big a workpiece fits on the VP-1612?

The table measures 1,600 x 1,100 mm (63.0 x 43.3 in) and is rated for 3,000 kg (6,614 lb). The columns stand 1,300 mm (51.2 in) apart, which sets the widest part that can pass under the bridge. Travels are 1,600 mm in X, 1,200 mm (47.2 in) in Y and 760 mm (29.9 in) in Z.

02 Is the VP-1612 faster than the longer VP machines?

In X, yes against the long ones. The VP-1612 rapids at 24 m/min (945 ipm) in X, which the VP-2012 matches. The VP-3012 drops to 20 m/min (787 ipm) and the VP-5012 to 8 m/min (315 ipm). Y and Z rapids are the same across those models.

03 What separates the VP-1612 from the VP-1612HS?

The spindle. The VP-1612 has a gear spindle at 6,000 rpm with an 11 / 15 kW (14.8 / 20.1 hp) motor and a BT50 taper. The VP-1612HS is listed with a direct-driven spindle at 10,000 rpm, 22 / 26 kW (29.5 / 34.9 hp) and BBT50. Travels, table and the 14,000 kg (30,864 lb) weight are the same on both.

04 Which guide ways does the VP-1612 use?

AWEA states linear guide ways on the X and Y axes and a box way on Z that is hardened and precisely ground for heavy-duty cutting. Roller type linear guide ways on Z are named as an option tied to the high speed direct drive spindle.

05 What does the VP-1612 need from the shop?

A three-phase supply of 40 kVA and compressed air at 5 ~ 7 kg/cm². The coolant tank holds 465 liter and the hydraulic unit 8 liter. The floor has to take a machine weight of 14,000 kg (30,864 lb) plus up to 3,000 kg (6,614 lb) on the table.
