Overview
The Brother TC-R2B is a small vertical tapping center with 420 mm (16.5 in) of X, 320 mm (12.6 in) of Y and 305 mm (12 in) of Z travel, a 10,000 rpm spindle (16,000 rpm optional) and a 14-tool magazine. It is a discontinued model, so a buyer today is looking at a used machine.
Compared with the TC-31B, the TC-R2B is the wider and shallower-in-Z machine: the TC-31B has 350 mm (13.8 in) of X and 250 mm (9.8 in) of Y but 350 mm (13.8 in) of Z, and 26 tools (+1). The R2B therefore suits flatter parts spread across the table, and the TC-31B suits taller work and longer tool lists. Both share 50 m/min (1,968 ipm) rapids on all axes.
The 14-tool magazine is the figure to plan around. A job that needs a centre drill, a few drill sizes, taps and a chamfer tool fits, but running two or three different parts from a single loaded magazine will soon use every pocket. The standard spindle reaches 10,000 rpm; small drills and fine taps run better on a machine with the 16,000 rpm option fitted, so check which spindle a used unit carries.
