Overview

The Brother TC-R2B is the larger of the two pallet-equipped tapping centers in Brother's current-generation TC-R2 series. It combines a two-pallet automatic changer with expanded X/Y/Z travels of 500 x 400 x 300 mm, a 5.5 kW spindle motor, and a 100 kg per-pallet load capacity — making it the most capable pallet-equipped tapping center Brother produces.

The integrated two-pallet changer enables load-while-machining operation. The operator sets up parts on one pallet while the machine cuts on the other, and the pallets index automatically in approximately 4 seconds at cycle end. This eliminates idle time and maximizes spindle utilization for high-volume production.

The BT30 spindle runs at 16,000 rpm standard with an optional 20,000 rpm configuration. The 5.5 kW motor provides genuine milling capability for contour milling, pocketing, and face milling alongside high-speed drilling and tapping. The 21-tool ATC maintains sub-1-second tool-to-tool changes.

Brother's column-traverse architecture moves the spindle column rather than the pallets, reducing workpiece-side moving mass for the fast acceleration that defines the tapping center class. Rapid traverse rates of 50 m/min on all axes keep repositioning time minimal.

The CNC-C00 control manages pallet scheduling, tool changes, and machining programs. Two-pallet scheduling supports different programs on each pallet for mixed-model production. Enhanced IoT connectivity options enable integration with production monitoring systems.

The TC-R2B targets the highest-volume production applications where the combination of pallet-change operation, high spindle speed, and milling capability eliminates the need for multiple separate machines in the production cell.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Two-pallet changer plus 16,000 rpm spindle delivers the highest productivity in the TC series
  • 5.5 kW motor and 500x400x300 mm travels handle both milling and tapping on medium-sized parts
  • 100 kg per-pallet load capacity accommodates heavier castings and multi-part fixtures
  • Sub-1-second tool changes and 50 m/min rapids maintain class-leading cutting speed
  • IoT connectivity enables Industry 4.0 production monitoring integration
  • Pallet scheduling supports mixed-model production with different programs per pallet

Limitations

  • Highest cost in the Brother tapping center lineup requires strong volume justification
  • Largest footprint in the TC series reduces the density advantage of tapping centers
  • BT30 taper limits heavy cutting versus CAT40/BT40 machining centers
  • Two-pallet mechanism adds maintenance complexity versus single-table machines

Best For

Highest-volume automotive production requiring maximum spindle utilization Mixed-operation parts combining tapping, drilling, and milling with pallet-change throughput Production cells replacing multiple single-table tapping centers with fewer pallet machines Shops needing pallet-change productivity without investing in full HMC systems Die-cast aluminum components with both hole-intensive and milled feature content

Frequently Asked Questions

01 How does the TC-R2B compare to the TC-R2A?

The TC-R2B has larger Y/Z travels (400x300 vs 300x250 mm), a stronger 5.5 kW motor (vs 3.7 kW), 16,000 rpm standard spindle (vs 10,000), 100 kg pallet load (vs 80 kg), and larger pallet size. It is the premium pallet-equipped option.

02 How does the TC-R2B compare to a horizontal machining center?

The TC-R2B provides pallet-change productivity at roughly one-third the cost and footprint of a typical HMC. However, HMCs offer larger work envelopes, higher spindle power, CAT40/BT40 tooling, and multi-pallet pools. The TC-R2B is best for smaller parts.

03 Can the TC-R2B replace a TC-S2DN plus operator?

In many cases, yes. The pallet changer allows one operator to manage loading while the machine cuts continuously, achieving throughput that would otherwise require a dedicated operator at a single-table machine. The ROI depends on labor cost versus the pallet machine premium.

04 What is the pallet index time?

Approximately 4 seconds for a full pallet swap. This is fast enough that pallet exchange time is negligible on most production cycles exceeding 30 seconds.
