Price estimate
We do not have a price for the Hedelius FORTE 9-4600 that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
The Hedelius FORTE 9-4600 is a 3-axis travelling column machining centre for workpieces that are both long and heavy: 4,600 mm (181.1 in) of X travel, a fixed table with a clamping area of 5,080 x 900 mm, and a table load of 5,000 kg (11,023 lb). Y is 900 mm and Z is 1,005 mm.
Hedelius makes its case for this model with weight. On a moving-table machine, five tonnes on the table would dictate the acceleration. Here the table is part of the bed and the column carries the axes, so in the maker's words the dynamics of the machine are independent of the workpiece weight. The column is grey cast iron, described as torsion-resistant with good vibration damping. Feeds stay at 40 m/min on X, Y and Z and the feed force is 27,000 N.
The work area can be divided for pendulum operation into 2,025 x 2,025 mm, two zones that are each larger than the whole travel of many vertical machines. A travelling magazine with 60 places and a double gripper serves both, at ca. 12 s chip to chip.
The standard spindle is an SK40 unit with 14,000 rpm and 22 kW. Options in the data sheet are 185 Nm and 37 kW in SK40 / BT40, and in HSK A63 either 18,000 rpm with 35 kW or 15,000 rpm with 217 Nm and 50 kW. Direct measuring systems are fitted. Installation is a project in itself. The machine weighs 23,000 kg (50,705 lb), with a transport width of 3,650 / 3,520 mm and a height of 2,960 mm.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- Table load of 5,000 kg (11,023 lb) on a fixed 5,080 x 900 mm table
- Dynamics independent of workpiece weight: 40 m/min feeds with the table fully loaded
- Pendulum operation with two work areas of 2,025 x 2,025 mm
- Grey cast iron travelling column, described by Hedelius as torsion-resistant and vibration-damping
- Spindles up to 50 kW and 217 Nm, with a 60-place travelling magazine
Limitations
- 23,000 kg (50,705 lb) machine weight calls for foundation and rigging planning
- Y travel of 900 mm is modest against 4,600 mm of X
- Standard spindle is 22 kW; 37 kW, 35 kW and 50 kW units are options
- Tool weight limit of 5 kg unless other weights are agreed

Frequently Asked Questions
01
The table load is 5,000 kg (11,023 lb). The table is fixed, with a clamping area of 5,080 x 900 mm and seven 18 mm T-slots at 125 mm spacing. Hedelius states that the dynamics of the machine are independent of the workpiece weight.
02
X 4,600 mm (181.1 in), Y 900 mm (35.4 in) and Z 1,005 mm (39.6 in), with a spindle distance of 15 to 1,020 mm. All three axes feed at up to 40 m/min, with a maximum feed force of 27,000 N.
03
The data sheet gives 2,025 x 2,025 mm for pendulum operation on the FORTE 9-4600, so each of the two work areas offers 2,025 mm along X. One zone can be loaded while the other is machined, which reduces downtime in series production.
04
The standard weight of 23,000 kg (50,705 lb), the delivery/transport height of 2,960 mm and the width of 3,650 / 3,520 mm. The chip conveyor is available in right-hand or left-hand design, which should be settled together with the layout.
