Overview

Fryer's MB-14Q sits in the middle of the MB-Q toolroom bed mills, with 40 x 20 x 20 in (1,016 x 508 x 508 mm) of travel and a 16 x 54 in (406 x 1,372 mm) table. Compared with the MB-10Q it adds reach in every axis while keeping the same quill, the same 1.26 in (32 mm) ballscrews and the same 80 in (2,032 mm) depth of floor.

The travels suit the die blocks, plates and fixtures a toolroom sees most often. A 20 in (508 mm) Y stroke, with the spindle centre 20 in from the column, reaches across the 16 in (406 mm) table with room to spare. The table is rated 2,450 lb (1,111 kg) evenly distributed and stands 33 in (838 mm) off the floor, a comfortable height for loading by hand.

Like its siblings this is a CNC that keeps the controls of a manual machine: handles on X and Y, a manual quill with 6 in (152 mm) of travel, and a head that swivels +/- 90°. Fryer's control offers "Do One" cycles for pockets, drilling and bolt circles and menu programming without codes, and it also reads standard G and M codes from CAD-CAM systems. Rigid tapping with a peck feature is listed among the features.

Power comes from a 10 hp (7.5 kW) peak motor through a 2 speed gear box into a CAT 40 spindle, 10-500 rpm in low and 100-4,500 rpm in high. Supply is 35 A at 208-250 VAC, 3 phase, so the machine can go into a building without high-voltage service; 380-500 VAC is the option here, the reverse of Fryer's larger machining centers.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 40 x 20 x 20 in (1,016 x 508 x 508 mm) travels with a 16 x 54 in (406 x 1,372 mm) table
  • Standard supply is 208-250 VAC three-phase at 35 A
  • "Do One" cycles and menu programming at the control, plus standard G and M code programs from CAD-CAM
  • Positioning accuracy of +/- 0.0002 in (0.0051 mm) with repeatability of +/- 0.0001 in (0.0025 mm)
  • 6,000 lb (2,722 kg) of machine built on Meehanite castings

Limitations

  • Tools are changed by hand; the table lists no tool changer
  • Operating width is 113 in (2,870 mm) because the table travels past the base at both ends
  • Spindle power is 10 hp (7.5 kW) peak, well below the 30 hp (22.4 kW) of the MC-30B machining center
  • Coolant capacity is 12 gal (45 L), and the flood coolant system itself is on the options sheet

Best For

Tool and die work on blocks and plates up to 40 in (1,016 mm) long Maintenance departments that need manual and CNC use in one machine Shops with 208-250 VAC three-phase power only Prototype parts programmed conversationally

Frequently Asked Questions

01 How big is the Fryer MB-14Q?

Operating dimensions are 113 x 80 x 106 in (2,870 x 2,032 x 2,692 mm) and the machine weighs 6,000 lb (2,722 kg). Shipping dimensions are 54 x 80 x 78 in (1,372 x 2,032 x 1,981 mm), which Fryer notes require some disassembly.

02 How does the MB-14Q differ from the MB-10Q?

The MB-10Q has 32 x 17 x 19 in (813 x 432 x 483 mm) of travel, a 14 x 50 in (356 x 1,270 mm) table rated 2,000 lb (907 kg) and a weight of 5,000 lb (2,268 kg). The MB-14Q is larger in each of those figures. Spindle, quill, ballscrew size and feed rates are the same rows for both.

03 What power does the MB-14Q need?

35 A at 208-250 VAC, 3 phase, with a change to 380-500 VAC listed as an option. Air demand is 3 cfm (85 L/min) at 85 psi (5.9 bar). The coolant tank holds 12 gal (45 L) and the pump delivers 3 gpm (11 L/min).

04 How is the MB-14Q programmed?

At the Fryer / Siemens 828-HS control. Fryer lists "Do One" cycles for pockets, drilling and bolt circles, simple menu programming with no codes of any kind, solid model part verification, and the ability to read standard G and M codes from CAD-CAM systems. A FANUC 0i MF Plus is offered as a control upgrade.
