How much does the Fehlmann PICOMAX 56 mill cost?
Price estimate
We do not have a price for the Fehlmann PICOMAX 56 mill that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
The Fehlmann PICOMAX 56 mill is a CNC milling machine that can be locked down into a conventional one. It has three mechanical-electronic handwheels for X, Y and Z, a Heidenhain TNC 620 with multi-touch operation, and travels of 500 x 400 x 400 mm (19.7 x 15.7 x 15.7 in) over a 908 x 480 mm clamping surface.
Training is the use Fehlmann builds this model around. A key-operated CNC/manual switch turns the machine into a simple conventional mill: the CNC functions are hidden, the display shows only what is needed, and feed and speed are reduced. Instructors can save the settings for each level of instruction, and the maker notes that the machine is suited for examinations on conventional machines. Basic milling is taught behind a safety door.
Outside the classroom the handwheels are a production tool. In mill mode the three handwheels are active in parallel and the control acts as a digital display, so a simple face, slot or hole pattern on a single part is done without a program. Fehlmann states that conventional operations can be integrated without affecting work offsets, tools or existing CNC programs, so a manual cut can be dropped into the middle of a CNC job.
The spindle is a cooled motor spindle: 50 - 12,000 rpm, 9.5 kW (12.7 hp) at S6 (40% ED) and a quoted 60 Nm, enough for milling and drilling in steel up to Ø 40 mm. An automatic tool changer for 20 or 30 tools and a dividing unit for simultaneous 4-axis machining are options. Without the tool changer the machine weighs 3,050 kg (6,724 lb), and it needs 1.7 / 1.9 / 2.5 m of space.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- Key switch turns the CNC machine into a simple conventional mill with reduced feed and speed
- Three parallel-active handwheels for the X, Y and Z axes
- Manual operations fit into a CNC job without affecting work offsets, tools or programs
- Heidenhain TNC 620 with multi-touch operation and graphically supported cycles
- Cooled motor spindle: 50 - 12,000 rpm, 9.5 kW (12.7 hp), 60 Nm
- Instructors can configure and save settings for each level of instruction
Limitations
- Tool change is manual unless the optional changer for 20 or 30 tools is ordered
- Travels of 500 x 400 x 400 mm limit it to small and medium parts; the PICOMAX 56L mill offers 800 mm in X
- The dividing unit for 4-axis work is an option
- 9.5 kW (12.7 hp) of spindle power suits toolroom cuts, not production roughing

Frequently Asked Questions
01
An additional key-operated CNC/manual switch turns the machine into a simple conventional milling machine. In that state the CNC functions are hidden, the display shows only the necessary functions, and feed and speed are reduced for a safe start. Instructors can configure and save the settings to match the level of instruction.
02
Yes. It carries a Heidenhain TNC 620 with multi-touch operation, and Fehlmann says complex parts are machined with the control and its graphically supported cycles. The machine can be switched to CNC mode at any time at the push of a button, and with the optional dividing unit it performs simultaneous 4-axis machining.
03
The specification tables match: same travels, clamping surface, spindle and control. The mill version is worked through three handwheels for X, Y and Z and has the key switch for a reduced, conventional mode, so it leans towards training. The PICOMAX 56 TOP pairs handwheels with a drilling lever and its TOP functions for quick one-off work.
04
X travel is 500 mm (19.7 in), Y and Z are 400 mm (15.7 in) each. The clamping surface measures 908 x 480 mm (35.7 x 18.9 in) and the distance from table to spindle nose is 120 - 520 mm. The large table is what allows a tailstock to be used together with the optional dividing unit.
05
Fehlmann names a dividing unit for 4-axis operation and an automatic tool changer with 20 or 30 pockets among the functional machine options. The base machine has manual tool change and three axes. Its motor spindle, at 50 - 12,000 rpm with 9.5 kW (12.7 hp), is part of the basic version.
