Overview

The Kao Ming KMC-321SR is a double-column machining center for tall, heavy work: 3,230 mm (127.2 in) of X, 2,000 mm (78.7 in) of Y and 1,100 mm (43.3 in) of Z, with 2,100 mm (82.7 in) between the columns and a 1,650 x 3,000 mm (65 x 118.1 in) table rated for 12,000 kg (26,400 lb).

Z is what separates it from its neighbours. Spindle nose to table runs 200 - 1,300 mm (7.87 - 51.2 in), while the KMC-3000SV and the KMC-321HIS both list 850 mm (33.46 in) of Z as standard on the same 3,230 mm X travel. The extra height shows in the building requirement. The machine stands 4,950 mm (194.9 in) tall on 8,130 x 5,230 mm (320.1 x 205.9 in) of floor and weighs 30,000 kg (66,000 lb).

The spindle is the other half of the case. Kao Ming lists 1,018 Nm (104 kg-m) of torque from an ISO 50 spindle with a 22 / 26 kW (30 / 35 HP) motor, continuous / 30 min, through an infinitely variable two-step drive. Top speed is 4,000 rpm, with 6,500 or 8,000 rpm optional. This is a roughing spindle for steel and cast iron, and the magazine allows the tooling to match: Ø130 mm (5.12 in) with every pocket full, Ø200 mm (7.87 in) without adjacent tools, 350 mm (13.8 in) long and 20 kg (44 lb).

Rapids are 15 / 15 / 12 m/min (590 / 590 / 472 ipm) and cutting feed is 1 - 8,000 mm/min (0.1 - 313.7 ipm), so the axes are sized for load, not for speed. Thirty tools are standard, with 40, 50, 60 or 90 optional. Services are 70 KVA, with 80 KVA listed as an option, and air at 5 - 7 kg/cm² (71 - 99.4 psi). Positioning is ±0.005 mm / 300 mm and ±0.010 mm over full travel, with ±0.003 mm (±0.0001 in) repeatability.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 1,018 Nm (104 kg-m) of spindle torque from a 22 / 26 kW (30 / 35 HP) ISO 50 spindle
  • 1,100 mm (43.3 in) of Z travel with up to 1,300 mm (51.2 in) from spindle nose to table
  • 12,000 kg (26,400 lb) table load on a 1,650 x 3,000 mm (65 x 118.1 in) table
  • Tools up to Ø200 mm (7.87 in) without adjacent tools, 350 mm (13.8 in) long and 20 kg (44 lb)
  • Optional 6,500 or 8,000 rpm spindles and magazines of 40, 50, 60 or 90 tools

Limitations

  • Standard top speed is 4,000 rpm, which restricts small-diameter tools and high-speed finishing
  • Rapids of 15 / 15 / 12 m/min (590 / 590 / 472 ipm) are slow for work with many short moves
  • At 4,950 mm (194.9 in) tall and 30,000 kg (66,000 lb), it needs a high bay, crane access and a prepared foundation
  • One column spacing only, 2,100 mm (82.7 in), where the KMC-3000SV is offered from 1,500 mm (59.05 in) to 2,800 mm (110.2 in)

Frequently Asked Questions

01 How much torque and power does the KMC-321SR spindle have?

Kao Ming lists 1,018 Nm (104 kg-m) of spindle torque and an AC motor of 22 / 26 kW (30 / 35 HP), continuous / 30 min. The spindle is ISO 50 with an infinitely variable two-step drive. Standard top speed is 4,000 rpm, and 6,500 or 8,000 rpm versions are options.

02 What is the difference between the KMC-321SR and the KMC-321HIS?

The spindle and the height. The KMC-321HIS lists an ISO 40 direct-drive spindle at 100 - 15,000 rpm with 150 Nm (111 lb-ft), 850 mm (33.46 in) of Z and a weight of 24,500 kg (53,900 lb). This machine has an ISO 50 spindle with 1,018 Nm at 4,000 rpm, 1,100 mm (43.3 in) of Z and weighs 30,000 kg (66,000 lb). Both carry 12,000 kg (26,400 lb) on the table.

03 How tall a workpiece fits under the KMC-321SR spindle?

Z travel is 1,100 mm (43.3 in) and the distance from spindle nose to table is 200 - 1,300 mm (7.87 - 51.2 in). The usable height is what remains after the fixture and the tool, which can be up to 350 mm (13.8 in) long. Width between the columns is 2,100 mm (82.7 in).

04 What does the KMC-321SR need for installation?

Floor space of 8,130 x 5,230 mm (320.1 x 205.9 in), a machine height of 4,950 mm (194.9 in) and a foundation for 30,000 kg (66,000 lb). Power is 70 KVA, with 80 KVA listed as an option, and the air supply is 5 - 7 kg/cm² (71 - 99.4 psi).

05 Which controls are available on the KMC-321SR?

The standard control is a FANUC 0i series, with the 31i as an option. Kao Ming also lists Heidenhain, Siemens and Mitsubishi controls as options. The table gives no further detail on control features, so those need to be settled in the quotation.
