Overview

The Chevalier EM2040L is the long-table model of the EM vertical machining centers, with 40.2 in (1,020 mm) of X travel on a 47.2 in x 20.1 in (1,200 x 510 mm) table. Y and Z stay at 20.9 in (530 mm) and 20.1 in (510 mm), the same as on the EM2033L, so the extra capacity is all along the table.

That makes it the EM machine for long parts and for three-vise or two-fixture setups. Table load rises to 1,320 lb (600 kg). The spindle nose to table range shifts slightly, to 5.1 in to 25.2 in (130 to 640 mm). Weight is 13,600 lb (6,200 kg) and the footprint 107.0 in x 118.5 in, about fourteen inches wider than the shorter machine.

Everything at the spindle is common to the series. It is a 10,000 rpm spindle with #40 Big Plus taper and a 2.4 in (60 mm) spindle diameter, listed with belt drive or direct drive. The 24+1 arm type changer works in 3 sec tool-to-tool and takes BT40 tooling, or CT40 or DIN40 as options. Rapid traverse is 1,417 / 1,417 / 944 ipm.

Chevalier lists high-speed linear ways on all axes, a cast iron structure, and an automatic chip flushing system that feeds a conveyor to a collector at the rear. On a table 47.2 in long the flushing matters, because chips from a job at one end otherwise bury the fixture at the other. The control is a Fanuc 0i-M.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 40.2 in (1,020 mm) of X travel on a 47.2 in x 20.1 in (1,200 x 510 mm) table
  • Table load of 1,320 lb (600 kg)
  • Same Y, Z, spindle and tool changer as the EM2033L, so programs and tooling transfer
  • Automatic chip flushing and conveyor, per the maker
  • Weighs 13,600 lb (6,200 kg) on a 107.0 in x 118.5 in footprint

Limitations

  • Y travel stays at 20.9 in (530 mm); the QP2440-L gives 24.0 in (610 mm) on the same X
  • 10,000 rpm is the only spindle speed listed
  • 3 sec tool-to-tool change time
  • Minimum spindle nose to table distance is 5.1 in (130 mm), so very short tools on low parts need risers
06

Best For

Long parts such as rails, bars and manifolds up to 40.2 in (1,020 mm) Three-vise production setups Two-station fixture plates run alternately Plate work up to 1,320 lb (600 kg)

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What does the EM2040L add over the EM2033L?

X travel and table length. The EM2040L has 40.2 in (1,020 mm) of X and a 47.2 in x 20.1 in (1,200 x 510 mm) table rated for 1,320 lb (600 kg). The EM2033L has 33.5 in (850 mm) of X and a 39.4 in x 20.1 in (1,000 x 510 mm) table rated for 1,100 lb (500 kg).

02 What are the rapid and cutting feed rates?

Rapid traverse is 1,417 / 1,417 / 944 ipm (36 / 36 / 24 m/min) in X, Y and Z. Cutting feed is listed as 39.3 to 393 ipm (1 to 10 m/min). All axes run on linear ways.

03 How large can the tools be?

Up to 3.1 in (Ø80 mm) in diameter with adjacent tools in place, 11.8 in (300 mm) long and 15.4 lb (7 kg). The magazine is a 24+1 arm type with a tool change time of 3 sec tool-to-tool.

04 How much space does the EM2040L need?

Floor space is listed as 107.0 in x 118.5 in x 102.4 in (2,720 x 3,020 x 2,600 mm) and net weight as 13,600 lb (6,200 kg). The chip collector is at the rear of the base, so keep that side accessible.
