Price estimate
We do not have a price for the Huron NX 40 that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
The Huron NX 40 is a three-axis portal milling centre built for roughing: an ISO 50 spindle with 32.3 kW and 170 Nm, a 6,000 kg (13,228 lb) table load and 22,000 kg (48,501 lb) of machine. Travels are 2,200 x 1,500 x 800 mm (86.6 x 59.1 x 31.5 in). It is the smallest of the four NX models.
Huron's own tagline for the series is power and rigidity for roughing, and one design detail backs it up. The vertical axis runs on a friction guiding system, which Huron credits with high chip removal capacity. Sliding ways damp cutting vibration better than rolling elements, and the price is speed: the Z axis traverses at 15 m/min and X and Y at 20 m/min.
The spindle tops out at 6,000 rpm with a nominal speed of 1,750 rpm. This is a machine for large inserted cutters, not small ball-nose tools. The 40-pocket changer accepts tools of 125 mm diameter, or 220 mm with free neighbours, up to 350 mm long and 15 kg.
A 2,200 x 1,250 mm table sits between uprights that Huron says are set wide apart to use the full volume. Access is through a tunnel-type shroud. Positioning is stated at 0.020 mm and repeatability at 0.008 mm. Allow 5,100 x 8,200 mm of floor and 4,630 mm of height.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- ISO 50 spindle with 32.3 kW and 170 Nm for heavy cutters
- Friction guiding system on the vertical axis, which Huron cites for high chip removal on roughing
- 6,000 kg (13,228 lb) table load on a 2,200 x 1,250 mm table
- Tools up to 220 mm in diameter with adjacent pockets free, and 15 kg in weight
- 40 tool housings, more than the 24 of the NX 70
Limitations
- Top spindle speed is 6,000 rpm, too low for small-tool finishing
- Rapids are 20 m/min on X and Y and 15 m/min on Z
- Positioning is stated as 0.020 mm and repeatability as 0.008 mm
- Takes 8,200 mm of depth and 4,630 mm of height

Frequently Asked Questions
01
Huron describes the NX series as flexible, modular three-axis portal milling centres for general mechanical and precision engineering, aimed at intense machining of large, heavy and complex parts. With an ISO 50 spindle of 32.3 kW and 170 Nm, the NX 40 is set up for roughing.
02
Travels are 2,200 mm in X, 1,500 mm in Y and 800 mm in Z. The table is 2,200 x 1,250 mm and its admissible load is 6,000 kg (13,228 lb).
03
The NX 50 extends X travel to 3,200 mm on a 3,000 x 1,250 mm table rated for 8,000 kg. Y and Z, the spindle and the tool changer are the same. The NX 50 weighs 25,000 kg against 22,000 kg for the NX 40, and its X rapid is 15 m/min instead of 20 m/min.
04
The changer has 40 housings. Tools can be 125 mm in diameter, or 220 mm when adjacent housings are empty, up to 350 mm long and up to 15 kg (33 lb). The spindle taper is ISO 50.
