Price estimate
We do not have a price for the Colchester Storm VL-1600 that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
Long X on a mid-depth machine describes the Colchester Storm VL-1600: 1,600 mm (63.0 in) of X travel with 700 mm (27.6 in) in Y and Z. The table is 1,750 x 700 mm (68.9 x 27.6 in). In effect it is the Storm VL-1300 with a longer bed, and the two share their Y, Z, spindle height range and table rating.
That shared rating matters. The table takes 1,500 kg (3,307 lb), no more than the shorter machine, so the added length is for longer parts and more stations, not for heavier ones. Spread over 1,750 mm (68.9 in), that load suits aluminium beams, long weldments and rows of fixtures better than a single dense block.
Pendulum machining is the obvious way to use the stroke. With two work zones set up at either end of the table, the operator can load one while the spindle cuts in the other, and a 1,600 mm (63.0 in) stroke gives each zone a useful width. The 24-tool twin arm changer has to serve both jobs, so tool lists need to overlap.
The head is standard for the series, with a BT40 taper, 10,000 rpm and 11 kW (14.8 hp), and the spindle nose travels from 130 mm (5.1 in) to 830 mm (32.7 in) above the table. Chip volume on long aluminium parts is high. The swarf conveyor is an option on Colchester's list and belongs on any order for this model.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- 1,600 mm (63.0 in) of X travel
- 1,750 x 700 mm (68.9 x 27.6 in) table suited to two work zones
- 700 mm (27.6 in) Y and Z travel with up to 830 mm (32.7 in) under the spindle
- Linear guideways for long positioning moves
Limitations
- Table load stays at 1,500 kg (3,307 lb) despite the longer table
- One 24-tool magazine must cover both zones in pendulum work
- Spindle power is 11 kW (14.8 hp)
- Swarf conveyor is an option

Frequently Asked Questions
01
The table is 1,750 x 700 mm (68.9 x 27.6 in), over an X-axis travel of 1,600 mm (63.0 in). Y-axis and Z-axis travel are 700 mm (27.6 in) each. There are 5 T-slots of 18 mm (0.7 in).
02
No, only longer. The Storm VL-1300 has 1,300 mm (51.2 in) of X travel and a 1,450 x 700 mm (57.1 x 27.6 in) table. Table load, at 1,500 kg (3,307 lb), spindle power and the other travels are the same on both.
03
The Storm VL-1690 has the same 1,600 mm (63.0 in) X travel with 900 mm (35.4 in) in Y and 850 mm (33.5 in) in Z, on an 1,800 x 850 mm (70.9 x 33.5 in) table. Its table load is also 1,500 kg (3,307 lb).
04
BT40 taper, 10,000 rpm, 11 kW (14.8 hp). The spindle nose to table distance is 130 - 830 mm (5.1 - 32.7 in). Through spindle coolant can be added as an option.
