Overview

Between the entry model and the SK 50 machine sits the AXA VCC 2, a compact travelling column machining centre with travels of 1,200 x 600 x 700 mm (47.2 x 23.6 x 27.6 in). Its table is a single 1,350 x 600 mm (53.1 x 23.6 in) clamping surface with four T-slots, and it stays put: the column carries the spindle over the work.

What the VCC 2 adds over the base VCC is depth and height: the VCC has 550 mm of Y and 600 mm of Z, the VCC 2 has 600 mm and 700 mm. The distance from table to spindle nose runs from 180 mm to 880 mm, so taller fixtures and vices fit under the spindle. Table load is rated per area, 800 kg/m², not as a single figure.

The spindle options are those of the smaller machine. Drive no. 110 is standard, an SK 40 spindle with 6,000 rpm, 143 Nm and 30 kW at 40% DC, and 12,000 rpm is available as an option. If the work is mostly small tools, drive no. 100 reaches up to 15,000 rpm with 95 Nm. For heavier milling, drive no. 111 supplies 191 Nm and 40 kW.

AXA describes the casing as a fully closed working area with sliding doors that open above the workspace for loading. The magazine holds 22 tools, or 30 with the expansion, and tool changes take place behind the cladding of the working area. Feed force is 9,000 N and rapids are 25/25/20 m/min in X/Y/Z.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 1,200 x 600 x 700 mm travels over a fixed 1,350 x 600 mm table with four T-slots
  • Up to 880 mm between table and spindle nose leaves room for tall fixtures
  • Optional drive no. 111 raises the spindle to 191 Nm and 40 kW at 40% DC
  • Sliding doors open above the workspace, which AXA describes as ideal for loading
  • Positioning accuracy can be ordered as ± 0.015 mm or ± 0.0075 mm per 1,000 mm

Limitations

  • SK 40 only, with HSK A63 as the option; the 50-taper spindle is reserved for the VCC 50
  • Tools are limited to 85 mm in diameter with a full magazine
  • No more than 30 tool pockets, and 22 as delivered
  • Rapid traverse of 25/25/20 m/min, against 40/40/30 m/min on the VCC 50

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What are the travels of the AXA VCC 2?

X is 1,200 mm (47.2 in), Y is 600 mm (23.6 in) and Z is 700 mm (27.6 in). The clamping surface measures 1,350 x 600 mm and the distance between table and spindle nose ranges from 180 mm to 880 mm.

02 How much weight can the VCC 2 table carry?

AXA rates the table by area: 800 kg/m² (164 lb/ft²). The data sheet gives no single maximum workpiece weight, so work out the load from the footprint of the fixture and part, and ask AXA about concentrated loads.

03 Can the VCC 2 take an SK 50 spindle or a tilting head?

Not according to AXA's data sheet. The VCC 2 column lists SK 40 with HSK A63 as the option, and the tilting spindle head rows are filled in only for the VCC 50, which has an SK 50 spindle with 286 Nm as standard.

04 What accuracy does AXA state for the VCC 2?

Positioning accuracy is ± 0.02 mm per 1,000 mm per axis as standard, with ± 0.015 mm or ± 0.0075 mm as options. Repeating accuracy is ± 0.005 mm. AXA mounts the hardened steel slideways on manually scraped or ground surfaces.
