Overview

The Fadal VMC 2015HS is the small, fast machine of the Fadal range: a BT-30 vertical machining center with 19.7 in (500 mm) of X travel, 15.7 in (399 mm) of Y and 16 in (406 mm) of Z. Everything about it is sized for small parts run quickly. The standard spindle turns 12,000 rpm, rapids are 1,890 ipm (48.0 m/min), and the dual arm changer swaps tools in 1.0 sec tool to tool, which Fadal calls the fastest tool change time in its lineup.

A 30-taper spindle is a light one. Fadal lists 43.5 ft-lb (59 Nm) of torque and 10 hp (7.5 kW) peak, so the machine earns its keep with small cutters at high speed and not with face mills in steel. One step up, the VMC 2520 carries a CAT-40 spindle with 220 ft-lb (298 Nm). Faster spindles are options here: the table shows 15,000 rpm and 20,000 rpm, and the option list adds a 24K RPM motorized spindle. The power row also carries a 7.5 hp (5.6 kW) peak figure marked optional, so ask which motor goes with which spindle.

The table measures 25.6 x 15 in (650 x 381 mm) and takes 440 lb (200 kg). That rules out heavy fixtures, and a rotary table with a chuck uses up the allowance fast. Tools are limited to 6.6 lb (3.0 kg) and 7.9 in (201 mm) in length. Tool diameter can be 4 in (102 mm) with empty neighbouring pockets, or 2.4 in (61 mm) with adjacent tools.

The axes ride on linear roller bearing ways with dual supported, auto lubricated ball screws of 32 mm (1.3 in) diameter. A spindle oil cooler, spindle air blast, rigid tapping, a full enclosure and a chip wash down system are standard. Fadal gives the machine dimensions as 64 x 94 x 94 in (1,626 x 2,388 x 2,388 mm) and the weight as 6,160 lb (2,794 kg). A 4th axis is possible but not included: the prewire, the servo disconnect and the FR-6D and FR-6A rotary tables are all options.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 1.0 sec tool to tool on the 20-tool dual arm changer, the fastest tool change time in Fadal's lineup
  • Rapids of 1,890 ipm (48.0 m/min) on linear roller bearing ways
  • 12,000 rpm as standard, with 15,000 rpm and 20,000 rpm spindles listed as options
  • Machine dimensions of 64 x 94 x 94 in (1,626 x 2,388 x 2,388 mm) and a weight of 6,160 lb (2,794 kg) suit a small shop floor
  • Spindle oil cooler, spindle air blast, rigid tapping and a chip wash down system are standard features

Limitations

  • Spindle torque is 43.5 ft-lb (59 Nm) with 10 hp (7.5 kW) peak: a small-tool spindle, not one for heavy roughing
  • Table load is limited to 440 lb (200 kg)
  • Tools may weigh no more than 6.6 lb (3.0 kg) and be no longer than 7.9 in (201 mm)
  • Travels of 19.7 in (500 mm) in X and 15.7 in (399 mm) in Y restrict the machine to small parts
  • The 4th axis prewire, the servo disconnect and both rotary tables are options, not standard equipment

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What spindle does the Fadal VMC 2015HS have?

The table lists a BT-30 spindle that turns 12,000 rpm as standard, with 15,000 rpm and 20,000 rpm marked as options. The option list also names a 24K RPM motorized spindle. Torque is 43.5 ft-lb (59 Nm) and the motor is 10 hp (7.5 kW) peak; a 7.5 hp (5.6 kW) peak figure is marked optional, so confirm which motor belongs to which spindle.

02 How fast is the tool change on the VMC 2015HS?

1.0 sec tool to tool. The changer is a dual arm type with 20 tools and random tool selection, and Fadal describes it as the fastest tool change time in its lineup. For comparison, the VMC 2520 is listed at 1.5 sec tool to tool with 24 tools.

03 How large a part fits on the VMC 2015HS?

Travels are 19.7 in (500 mm) in X, 15.7 in (399 mm) in Y and 16 in (406 mm) in Z. The table is 25.6 x 15 in (650 x 381 mm) with a 440 lb (200 kg) load limit, and the spindle nose sits 5.9-21.6 in (150-549 mm) above it. Parts, vise and any rotary table together have to stay inside that load figure.

04 Can a 4th axis be added to the VMC 2015HS?

Yes, as an option. Fadal lists a 4th axis prewire and a 4th axis servo disconnect, and the FR-6D standard rotary table and FR-6A high speed rotary table both require the disconnect. A pneumatic 5C collet closure is on the option list as well. Check the combined weight against the 440 lb (200 kg) table load.

05 How much floor space does the VMC 2015HS need?

Fadal gives the machine dimensions as 64 x 94 x 94 in (1,626 x 2,388 x 2,388 mm), length by width by height, and the weight as 6,160 lb (2,794 kg). No usable figure is given for the machine with a chip conveyor, so ask for it before planning the layout.
