Feeler VMX-1020 — price

Price estimate: uncertain

We have no price for the Feeler VMX-1020 that we can cite and no estimate we can stand behind, so this page shows no number rather than a guess. A quote from Feeler or an authorised dealer is the reliable figure.

What moves the final price

  • Spindle, control and probing options
  • Tool changer capacity and tooling package
  • Automation — pallet changers, bar feeders, robot cells
  • Freight, rigging, installation and training
  • Region, dealer and time of year

Overview

A metre of X travel on a 40-taper vertical is the size many job shops settle on, and the Feeler VMX-1020 is that machine in the VMX range: 1,020 mm (40.2 in) in X, 520 mm (20.5 in) in Y and 560 mm (22.0 in) in Z. The table is 1,150 x 520 mm (45.3 x 20.5 in) and carries 800 kg (1,764 lb).

It is built on the same cross-section as the VMX-820. Y, Z, load, rapids and magazine are identical in the maker's table, and Feeler describes the two together: structural rigidity enhanced further, a 45 mm Z-axis roller, and worktable loads up to 800 kg for larger parts while maintaining accuracy. So the reason to pick this one is simply length, whether for a long part, a row of four vises, or a rotary table that stays bolted at one end while the rest of the table does three-axis work.

The spindle runs to 12,000 rpm on a 7/24 No.40 taper and is a direct-drive design that Feeler names as BBT40. With 24 tools and rapids of 40 m/min (1,575 ipm) on X and Y and 30 m/min (1,181 ipm) on Z, it is set up for mixed work rather than for one extreme.

Beyond this size the range changes character. The VMX-1100 has only slightly more X, but its Y is 610 mm, its table load 1,500 kg and its rapids 36 m/min, so parts that are deep or heavy rather than long point to that machine instead.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 1,020 mm (40.2 in) of X travel with a 1,150 mm long table
  • 800 kg (1,764 lb) table load, enough for steel fixtures and a rotary table together
  • 560 mm of Z travel and a 45 mm Z-axis roller cited by Feeler for this model and the VMX-820
  • 40 m/min X and Y rapids, faster than the 36 m/min of the VMX-1100
  • 24-tool magazine with a 12,000 rpm direct-drive BBT40 spindle

Limitations

  • Y travel is 520 mm (20.5 in); the VMX-1100 offers 610 mm for only slightly more X
  • Table load is 800 kg where the VMX-1100 is rated for 1,500 kg
  • A single 12,000 rpm spindle is listed, with no power or torque figure published
  • Tool-change time and maximum tool dimensions are absent from the series table

Job-shop work on parts up to about a metre long Four-vise or multi-fixture setups on a 1,150 mm table A permanently mounted fourth axis alongside three-axis work Mold and die components within 520 mm of Y and 800 kg

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What are the travels and table size of the Feeler VMX-1020?

X is 1,020 mm (40.2 in), Y is 520 mm (20.5 in) and Z is 560 mm (22.0 in). The table measures 1,150 x 520 mm (45.3 x 20.5 in) and the maximum loading weight is 800 kg (1,764 lb).

02 VMX-1020 or VMX-1100: which is the bigger machine?

The VMX-1100 is the heavier class despite the similar name. Feeler lists the VMX-1100 with 1,100 x 610 x 600 mm travels, a 1,200 x 600 mm table and 1,500 kg of load, with rapids of 36 m/min on X and Y. The VMX-1020 is faster on X and Y at 40 m/min and is the lighter-duty of the two.

03 Can a fourth axis be left on the table?

The figures allow it: the table is 1,150 mm long, the load rating is 800 kg and Z travel is 560 mm. Feeler's series page does not list rotary-table options or interface details, so the fourth-axis preparation has to be specified with the maker.

04 What does Feeler say about the construction?

The VMX series is built from Meehanite cast iron, optimized with ANSYS and NASTRAN finite element analysis, with an A-frame reinforced column base and servo motors driving the ball screws directly. For the VMX-820 and VMX-1020 Feeler adds a 45 mm Z-axis roller.
