Overview

The Sharp KMA-2H-CNC is a CNC bed mill with both a vertical and a horizontal spindle, and of the four KMA-H sizes it is the one whose travel rows read cleanly: 59 in (1500 mm) in X, 35.4 in (900 mm) in Y and 31 in (787 mm) in Z.

Those Y and Z figures are large for the table they serve. The table is 74.8 x 19.7 in (1900 x 500 mm), so Y travel is well beyond the table width and Z reaches from the table surface up to 23.7 in (0-602 mm between spindle nose and table). The extra stroke is what a horizontal spindle needs: it has to clear the part, come down beside it and reach in from the side.

Work is limited more by weight than by travel. Maximum workpiece weight is 3500 lb (1587 kg). Add an indexer or rotary table, which are options, and the fixture weight comes out of that allowance.

Both spindles are NT50 with 18 speed steps from 45 rpm to 1,500 rpm, and there is no automatic tool change. The front spindle bearing has a 3.54 in bore and the rear a 3.35 in bore (90 mm and 85 mm). Guideways are a dovetail on X and square ways on Y and Z with Turcite B; the Y ways are spaced 28.35 in (720 mm) apart. The machine weighs 13,200 lb (5987 kg) and needs 25 kVA.

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What are the travels of the KMA-2H-CNC?

X axis travel is 59 in (1500 mm), Y axis travel 35.4 in (900 mm) and Z axis travel 31 in (787 mm). Spindle nose to table is 0-23.7 in (0-602 mm) and spindle center to column is 21.6 in (548 mm).

02 How does the KMA-2H-CNC differ from the KMA-2-CNC?

The KMA-2-CNC has one vertical spindle, 26 in (660 mm) of Y travel and 23.6 in (600 mm) of Z travel, and carries 4,400 lb (2,000 kg). The KMA-2H-CNC adds a horizontal spindle and has 35.4 in (900 mm) of Y and 31 in (787 mm) of Z, with a 3500 lb (1587 kg) weight limit. X travel is 59 in (1500 mm) on both.

03 Can the KMA-2H-CNC machine five sides of a part?

Yes, with options. Sharp states that with the indexer or rotary table, which are optional items, the machine can perform 5-sided operations at one setup. The horizontal spindle reaches the sides while the vertical spindle works the top.

04 What guideways does the KMA-2H-CNC use?

Plain ways with Turcite B: a dovetail guide way on the X axis and square guide ways on Y and Z. Sharp lists the X ways at 2.33+3.07 in with 16.54 in spacing, the Y ways at 4.72+4.72 in with 28.35 in spacing and the Z ways at 3.94+3.94 in with 15.75 in spacing.
