Overview

Seventeen T-slots across a table three metres long: the Hartford SW-316 is a box-guideway double-column machining center for long, fairly narrow work. Its table is 3,000 x 1,450 mm (118.1 x 57.1 in), X travel is 3,100 mm (122.0 in) and Y travel 1,600 mm (63.0 in).

The T-slot row reads 22 x 180 (17) mm. Slots at that spacing make it easy to clamp a row of smaller parts or several vises, so the SW-316 serves batch work on plates and bars as well as single long parts. The table takes 8,000 kg (17,637 lb).

Like the SW-216 it is a pure gear-spindle machine. The #50 gear head runs 6,000 / 8,000 rpm on 15/18.5 kW, with 18.5/22 kW and 22/26 kW optional. Hartford states spindle run-out within 5μm. An arm-type magazine holds 32 tools, or 40, and an S type holds 20.

Z travel is 780 mm, with 1,070 mm given in brackets as the longer stroke. The gibs on X and Y are doubled and lubricated directly through the taper gib, which Hartford says prevents oil from leaking at the contact surface and protects the Turcite-B way lining. An angle head can be fitted for work on the sides of a part.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 3,100 mm (122.0 in) X travel with closely spaced T-slots, listed as 22 x 180 (17) mm
  • 8,000 kg (17,637 lb) table load
  • Double gibs on X and Y with direct taper gib lubrication
  • #50 gear spindle with stated run-out within 5μm
  • S-type 20-tool changer or arm-type 32 (40) tool changer

Limitations

  • Table width of 1,450 mm limits the part to roughly half the table length
  • Arm-type magazine listed with 32 or 40 tools only at this size
  • Spindle speed ends at 8,000 rpm
  • Longer Z travel of 1,070 mm is not the base configuration

Best For

Long steel bars, rails and machine ways Rows of vises or fixtures for batch milling Plate work up to 3,000 mm long Heavy cuts that benefit from box-way damping

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What are the travels of the Hartford SW-316?

3,100 mm (122.0 in) in X and 1,600 mm (63.0 in) in Y. Z travel is 780 mm, with 1,070 mm as the longer version. The table is 3,000 x 1,450 mm (118.1 x 57.1 in).

02 How much can the SW-316 table carry?

8,000 kg (17,637 lb) as an average load. T-slots are listed as 22 x 180 (17) mm, which gives many clamping positions across the table.

03 Which tool changers are listed for the SW-316?

The row reads #50 A: 32 (40) S: 20 pcs: an arm-type changer with 32 tools, or 40, and an S-type changer with 20. Shanks are BT-50, with BBT, CAT and DIN as alternatives.

04 How does the SW-316 differ from the SW-320?

The SW-320 is wider, with 2,000 mm (78.7 in) of Y travel, a 3,000 x 1,830 mm (118.1 x 72.0 in) table for 10,000 kg (22,046 lb) and a larger base motor of 18.5/22 kW. X travel is the same 3,100 mm (122.0 in).
