Overview

The Feeler FDM-4232 shares its table with the FDM-4228. Both are 4,000 × 2,600 mm (157.5 × 102.4 in). What the 32 adds is travel across the table and capacity on it: Y is 3,100 mm (122.0 in), with 3,700 mm (145.7 in) in brackets, and the load row reads 21 (24) ton.

The FDM-4228 lists 2,700 (3,300) mm of Y and 15 (21) ton. So for the same table area this model carries, as its listed rating, what the smaller one offers only in brackets.

Why would Y exceed the table width by so much? Extra cross travel lets the spindle clear the table edges, which is needed when a side-milling head works down the flank of a mould, when a tool or head is exchanged at a station beside the table, and when a workpiece overhangs its base plate. Feeler states that the FDM Series supports automatic head and tool changing; the stations and heads are not detailed in the table.

X travel is 4,200 mm (165.4 in), with X and Y rapids of 15 m/min (591 ipm) and a Z rapid of 12 m/min (472 ipm). The spindle is 6,000 rpm on BT/DIN/CAT 50 as listed, or 4,000-8,000 rpm with #40 in brackets. Z travel is 800 mm (31.5 in), with 1,000-1,400 mm bracketed. Tool capacity is 24, or 32-90.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Y travel of 3,100 mm (122.0 in), or 3,700 mm (145.7 in) bracketed, over a 2,600 mm wide table
  • 21 ton listed load, 24 ton bracketed
  • 15 m/min (591 ipm) rapids on X and Y
  • Automatic head and tool changing supported

Limitations

  • Table is no larger than on the FDM-4228
  • Shortest X travel of the 32 group at 4,200 mm
  • Head-change stations and attachment heads are not described on the series page
06

Best For

Moulds needing side machining with attachment heads Heavy tools up to 21 ton on a four-metre table Workpieces that overhang a 2,600 mm wide table

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What is the difference between the FDM-4232 and the FDM-4228?

Y travel and load. The FDM-4232 lists 3,100 (3,700) mm of Y and 21 (24) ton. The FDM-4228 lists 2,700 (3,300) mm and 15 (21) ton. X travel, the 4,000 × 2,600 mm table, Z, spindle, rapids and magazine are the same.

02 Why is the Y travel larger than the table?

Feeler does not explain it. Table width is 2,600 mm and Y travel 3,100 mm, so the spindle can travel past both table edges. On machines with changeable heads that room is typically used for side machining and for reaching a change station.

03 Is there a wider table in this length?

Yes. The FDM-4235 has a table 3,000 mm wide with 3,400 (4,000) mm of Y travel and a load row of 24 (27) ton, on the same 4,200 mm of X travel.

04 What spindle speeds are offered?

6,000 rpm as listed, with 4,000-8,000 rpm in brackets. The taper row reads BT/DIN/CAT 50(#40). Feeler says the enlarged spindle head and slide contact surfaces allow the use of larger diameter tools.
