Price estimate
We do not have a price for the Hartford SMC-7 that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
Hartford's SMC-7 stretches the SMC drill-tap platform to 700 mm (27.6 in) of X travel. Y stays at 400 mm (15.7 in) and Z at 300 mm (11.8 in), the spindle nose is #30 with BT30 shanks, and the table grows to 850 x 400 mm (33.5 x 15.7 in).
Why pick the longer machine? Usually for two fixtures side by side, or for a part that is long and flat: a housing cover, a heat sink, a rail. The average table load does not change with the length. It is 250 kg (551 lb), so the extra table is for more parts per cycle, not heavier ones.
The SMC-7 is also the model on which Hartford lists the larger tool magazine. The ATC row reads 14/21 pcs. According to the maker the servo-driven, arm-less changer takes 1.5 seconds with the 14-tool magazine and 1.91 seconds with the 21-tool magazine. Direct-drive spindle speeds are 10,000 / 12,000 / 15,000 / 20,000 / 24,000 rpm, and the spindle drive motor is 2.2 / 3.7 kW with 3.7 / 5.5 kW as the option (Cont. / 30 min).
Axis dynamics are those of the platform: 50 m/min rapid traverse and 1.4G acceleration on X and Y, 1.2G on Z, with a direct-drive Z servo on the ball screw. A top chip-flushing system inside a full enclosure washes chips towards the rear chip removal, which keeps the front of the machine clear when several stand in a row.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- 700 mm (27.6 in) of X travel on a 30-taper drill-tap platform
- 14 or 21 tool arm-less changer; 1.5 seconds with 14 tools, 1.91 seconds with 21
- Direct-drive spindle speeds listed up to 24,000 rpm
- 50 m/min rapid traverse with 1.4G acceleration on X and Y
- Top chip-flushing system with full enclosure and rear chip removal
Limitations
- Table load stays at 250 kg (551 lb) despite the longer 850 mm table
- Y travel of 400 mm (15.7 in) and Z travel of 300 mm (11.8 in) limit part height and depth
- Spindle motor is 2.2 / 3.7 kW, or 3.7 / 5.5 kW as the option (Cont. / 30 min), so heavy milling is out of scope
- BT30 tooling restricts cutter diameter and overhang compared with Hartford's #40 machines

Frequently Asked Questions

700 mm (27.6 in) in X, 400 mm (15.7 in) in Y and 300 mm (11.8 in) in Z. The table is 850 x 400 mm (33.5 x 15.7 in) with an average load rating of 250 kg (551 lb).
02
Either 14 or 21. Hartford describes a servo-driven, arm-less tool changer whose tool change time is 1.5 seconds for the 14-tool magazine and 1.91 seconds for the 21-tool magazine. All tools are BT30.
03
The table lists 2.2 / 3.7 kW with 3.7 / 5.5 kW as an option, as continuous / 30 min ratings. Spindle speeds on the DDS row run from 10,000 to 24,000 rpm in five steps, and Hartford also mentions an optional 12,000 / 20,000 rpm low-inertia spindle motor.
04
For light milling, yes. The limits come from the figures: a #30 spindle nose, a motor of at most 3.7 / 5.5 kW (Cont. / 30 min) and 300 mm (11.8 in) of Z travel. For heavier milling Hartford's #40 machines, such as the LG-800, are the better fit.
