Overview

The Hartford MCW-16650 is a sixteen-metre moving-column machining center of the wide cross section: a fixed table of 16,000 x 5,000 mm (629.9 x 196.9 in), X travel of 16,000 mm (629.9 in) and Y travel of 6,500 mm (255.9 in).

Hartford sums the series up as high rigidity plus high precision, and backs the first half with three design points. The columns are firm and their bases are extended in width to 1,250 mm, to reduce cutting vibration. The Z axis sits on four linear guideways in a patented three binding structure. And the W axis, which carries the entire cross-beam, is held by twin ballscrews driven by twin servo motors.

Why does rigidity get so much attention on a machine like this? Because the spindle works at the centre of a span of 6,500 mm, at the end of a ram, on a beam that itself hangs on screws. Each link adds compliance, and a 30 / 35 kW cut with a large face mill will find the weakest one. The points Hartford lists address the columns, the ram and the beam in turn.

Remaining figures: 3,000 kg/m² table load, Z travel 1,000 mm (1,200 / 1,400 mm optional), W travel 1,800 mm (2,100 mm optional), #50 gear head at 6,000 or 8,000 rpm, hybrid spindle at 10,000 rpm.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Column bases extended to 1,250 mm in width
  • Z axis on four linear guideways in a three binding structure
  • Cross-beam carried by twin ballscrews with twin servo motors
  • 16,000 x 5,000 mm (629.9 x 196.9 in) table with 6,500 mm (255.9 in) of Y

Limitations

  • Hartford gives no stiffness or cutting-force figures in the table to back the rigidity statements
  • The 30 / 35 kW motor is optional; 18.5 / 22 kW is standard
  • Table rated at 3,000 kg/m²

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What does Hartford say about the rigidity of the MCW-16650?

That the column bases are extended to 1250 mm to reduce cutting vibration, that the Z axis has four linear guideways in a three binding structure giving 20% rigidity while cutting, and that the W axis uses twin ballscrews and twin servo motors.

02 How big is the MCW-16650?

The table is 16,000 x 5,000 mm (629.9 x 196.9 in). X travel is 16,000 mm, Y travel 6,500 mm (255.9 in), Z travel 1,000 mm and W travel 1,800 mm, with longer Z and W as options.

03 What motor power can the MCW-16650 be ordered with?

The standard spindle motor is 18.5 / 22 kW (continuous / 30 min) and the optional motor 30 / 35 kW. Both drive a #50 spindle through either the gear head or the hybrid design.

04 MCW-16650 or MCW-16550?

The MCW-16550 has a 16,000 x 4,000 mm (629.9 x 157.5 in) table and 5,500 mm (216.5 in) of Y travel. Choose the MCW-16650 when parts or setups need the extra metre of width.
