Overview

The Hartford HSA-428 is a four-metre double-column machining center built on the three-guideway X axis. Its table is 4,000 x 2,500 mm (157.5 x 98.4 in) and carries 18,000 kg (39,683 lb). Travels are 4,000 mm (157.5 in) in X and 2,800 mm (110.2 in) in Y.

Linear guideways under 18 tonnes need explaining to anyone used to box-way bridge mills. Hartford's SW line still uses box ways; the SW-426, with the same table size, is rated for 13,500 kg (29,762 lb). The HSA-428 carries more on rolling guides by adding a third guideway under the table centre. The buyer gets higher traverse rates and lower friction, and gives up some of the damping that scraped ways provide in heavy interrupted cuts.

Spindle drives cover both ends of the work. The #50 gear head, at 6,000 / 8,000 rpm with up to 30 /37 kW, handles roughing. The DDS spindle at 10,000 / 12,000 rpm and the built-in spindle at 12,000 rpm handle finishing.

Z travel is 780 mm, with 1,000 mm and 1,200 mm optional, on a four-guideway ram with a nitrogen counterweight. The tool magazine is listed with 32 tools, or 40 or 60.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 18,000 kg (39,683 lb) table load on linear guideways
  • Three X-axis guideways under a 4,000 x 2,500 mm (157.5 x 98.4 in) table
  • Gear head with up to 30 /37 kW for roughing
  • DDS and built-in spindles at up to 12,000 rpm for finishing
  • Four-guideway Z ram with nitrogen counterweight

Limitations

  • Linear guides offer less damping than the box ways of the SW-426
  • Y-axis ballscrew support is optional on x28 models
  • Standard Z travel of 780 mm
  • Feed rates are not published, so the speed advantage cannot be quantified from the page

Best For

Large mould bases and die sets up to 18,000 kg (39,683 lb) Mixed roughing and finishing in one setup Heavy plate and frame work up to four metres Shops that prefer linear guideways on a heavy bridge machine

Frequently Asked Questions

01 How much weight can the Hartford HSA-428 table take?

18,000 kg (39,683 lb) as an average load, on a table of 4,000 x 2,500 mm (157.5 x 98.4 in). The table rides on three X-axis linear guideways.

02 What are the X, Y and Z travels of the HSA-428?

X 4,000 mm (157.5 in), Y 2,800 mm (110.2 in), and Z 780 mm with options of 1,000 mm and 1,200 mm. The Z ram runs on four linear guideways.

03 How does the HSA-428 compare with the box-way SW-426?

Both have a 4,000 x 2,500 mm (157.5 x 98.4 in) table. The SW-426 has box guideways, 2,600 mm (102.4 in) of Y and a 13,500 kg (29,762 lb) load. The HSA-428 has linear guideways, 2,800 mm (110.2 in) of Y and an 18,000 kg (39,683 lb) load.

04 What spindle does the HSA-428 use?

A #50 spindle as gear head (6,000 / 8,000 rpm), DDS (10,000 / 12,000 rpm) or built-in (12,000 rpm). The motor is 15 / 18.5 kW with options up to 30 /37 kW.
