Overview

Sixty inches of X travel on an open bed, with a tool changer: that is the Fryer MB-16R. Travels are 60 x 25 x 24 in (1,524 x 635 x 610 mm), the table is 18 x 70 in (457 x 1,778 mm) and the machine weighs 10,000 lb (4,536 kg), the heaviest of the MB toolroom mills.

The electrical row sets this model apart from its smaller siblings and should be read before anything else. Fryer's table gives 40 A with the note 220 VAC only, where the MB-14R is listed at 35 A, 208-250 VAC with 380-500 VAC as an alternative. A plant wired for high voltage will need to plan for that.

Mechanically the MB-16R combines the big casting set with the rigid head. Ballscrews are 1.57 in (40 mm), the table has 5 T-slots and takes 2,950 lb (1,338 kg), and the spindle sits 25 in (635 mm) from the column. Spindle nose to table is 28 to 4 in (711 - 102 mm). The head carries the same 12 hp (8.9 kW) peak, 60 - 8,000 rpm CAT 40 spindle as the rest of the MB-R series, with tool storage for 12 tools or 20 as an option.

On long parts the limiting figures are the feeds. A rapid of 400 ipm (10.2 m/min) and a cutting feed limit of 300 ipm (7.6 m/min) are the same as on the MB-10R, so travelling the full table takes proportionally longer. For rails, bars and plates machined a few at a time this rarely matters; for scattered hole patterns it adds up. Operating width is 174 in (4,420 mm).

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What power supply does the Fryer MB-16R need?

Fryer's table lists 40 A and 220 VAC only for the MB-16R. The MB-10R and MB-14R are listed at 35 A, 208-250 VAC, 3 phase. Air demand is 3 cfm (85 L/min) at 85 psi (5.9 bar). Confirm the voltage with Fryer before ordering if the building has 380-500 VAC service.

02 How does the MB-16R compare with the MB-16Q?

Both have 60 x 25 x 24 in (1,524 x 635 x 610 mm) of travel. The MB-16Q has a manual quill head, a 2 speed gear box and 4,500 rpm, and weighs 8,800 lb (3,992 kg). The MB-16R has a rigid head at 60 - 8,000 rpm, tool storage for 12 or 20 tools and weighs 10,000 lb (4,536 kg).

03 How large a part can the MB-16R table carry?

The table is 18 x 70 in (457 x 1,778 mm) with 5 T-slots 0.630 in (16 mm) wide and is rated 2,950 lb (1,338 kg) evenly distributed. The table top is 36 in (914 mm) from the floor.

04 Can the MB-16R be enclosed?

The options sheet lists a table mounted splash guard with doors and a safety switch for the MB-16, and a full machine guard for the MB-16 with a door safety switch. Steel way covers and a flood coolant system are also listed as options.
