Overview

The Kent CNC TW-50MCO is a CNC mill with a 20-tool carousel ATC, 50 x 20 x 22 in (1,270 x 508 x 559 mm) of travel and an 18 x 68 in (457 x 1,727 mm) table. Its CAT 40 spindle runs from 70 to 8,000 rpm. Spindle power depends on the control package: 10 hp (7.5 kW) as listed, or 7.5 hp (5.6 kW) with the Fanuc system.

That power split is the first thing to settle with the seller. The table names the Fanuc system only in the power row and gives no separate control row, so a buyer should ask which control the 10 hp (7.5 kW) figure belongs to and confirm the rating of the machine actually quoted.

Beside the TW-32Qi, the TW-50MCO is a larger and more automated machine. The TW-32Qi has a 12 x 50 in (305 x 1,270 mm) table, a 6,000 rpm spindle and a 1,000 lb (454 kg) distributed load rating, at 4,200 lb (1,905 kg). The TW-50MCO carries 1,760 lb (798 kg), weighs 7,700 lb (3,493 kg) and changes its own tools. A program with drills, taps and end mills can run through without the operator at the spindle, provided it fits in 20 pockets.

The table is long in proportion: 68 in (1,727 mm) of length for 50 in (1,270 mm) of X travel, and 18 in (457 mm) of width under 20 in (508 mm) of Y travel. Spindle center to column is 21.3 in (541 mm). The spindle nose ranges from 3.54 to 27.16 in (90 to 690 mm) above the table, generous for a 22 in (559 mm) Z travel, and there are three 5/8 in T-slots. Listed capacities are 8 in (203 mm) for boring and 2.5 in³/min (41 cm³/min) for milling.

For installation, the supply is 220 volts, 60 Hz, 3-phase, 60 Amps. The machine ships at 8,500 lb (3,856 kg) in a 112 x 90 x 99 in (2,845 x 2,286 x 2,515 mm) package. BT-40 is the optional taper, and the coolant pump is 0.25 hp (0.2 kW).

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 20-tool carousel ATC as part of the listed specification
  • 50 x 20 x 22 in (1,270 x 508 x 559 mm) of travel on an 18 x 68 in (457 x 1,727 mm) table
  • CAT 40 spindle (BT-40 optional) with a 70-8,000 rpm range, against 6,000 rpm on the TW-32Qi
  • Table load of 1,760 lb (798 kg), against 1,000 lb (454 kg) distributed on the TW-32Qi
  • Spindle nose to table distance of 3.54-27.16 in (90-690 mm)

Limitations

  • Spindle power drops from 10 hp (7.5 kW) to 7.5 hp (5.6 kW) with the Fanuc system
  • The table has no control row, so the standard control must be confirmed with the seller
  • Tool capacity is 20, fewer than the 24+1 tools of the KVR-2418A
  • Top speed of 8,000 rpm, against 10,000 rpm on the KVR-2418A
  • Needs 60 Amps at 220 volts 3-phase

Frequently Asked Questions

01 How much spindle power does the TW-50MCO have?

The table lists 10 hp (7.5 kW), and 7.5 hp (5.6 kW) with the Fanuc system. The spindle has a CAT 40 taper, with BT-40 optional, and a speed range of 70-8,000 rpm. Confirm which rating applies to the control package being quoted.

02 What tool changer does the TW-50MCO use?

A carousel ATC holding 20 tools. The table gives no tool change time or maximum tool dimensions, so ask for those if the job uses long or large-diameter tooling. For comparison, Kent CNC's KVR-2418A lists 24+1 tools.

03 What are the travels and table size of the TW-50MCO?

X travel is 50 in (1,270 mm), Y travel 20 in (508 mm) and Z travel 22 in (559 mm). The table is 18 x 68 in (457 x 1,727 mm) with three 5/8 in T-slots and a maximum load of 1,760 lb (798 kg).

04 What is the difference between the TW-50MCO and the TW-32Qi?

The TW-50MCO has a 20-tool carousel ATC, an 18 x 68 in (457 x 1,727 mm) table, an 8,000 rpm spindle and a weight of 7,700 lb (3,493 kg). The TW-32Qi has a 12 x 50 in (305 x 1,270 mm) table, a 7.5 hp (5.6 kW) spindle to 6,000 rpm with an NST-40 or CAT-40 taper, and a weight of 4,200 lb (1,905 kg).

05 What does the TW-50MCO need for installation?

Power is 220 volts, 60 Hz, 3-phase, 60 Amps. Machine weight is 7,700 lb (3,493 kg), shipping weight is 8,500 lb (3,856 kg) and the packing dimensions are 112 x 90 x 99 in (2,845 x 2,286 x 2,515 mm).
