Overview

The Chevalier EM1620L is the smallest of the EM vertical machining centers, with travels of 20.5 in (520 mm) in X, 14.5 in (368 mm) in Y and 15.0 in (380 mm) in Z. Chevalier positions the EM series as its cost-saving line for precision and high speed machining, and this model is the one sized for small parts and tight floor space.

It is also the quickest of the three EM machines. Rapid traverse is 1,889/1,889/1,417 ipm (48/48/36 m/min) on linear ways, where the larger EM2033L runs at 1,417 / 1,417 / 944 ipm. Short travels and fast rapids suit work with many small features and frequent tool changes, such as drilled and tapped plates, small housings and electrode blanks.

The spindle takes #40 Big Plus tooling and runs at 10,000 rpm; the table lists that speed for both a belt drive and a direct drive version. The changer is a 24+1 arm type with a 3 sec tool-to-tool time. Tool length is the figure to watch on this size: 7.9 in (200 mm), against 11.8 in (300 mm) on the EM2033L, so long drills and boring bars may not fit the magazine.

The 27.6 in x 12.6 in (700 x 320 mm) table carries 550 lb (250 kg). The machine weighs 5,070 lb (2,300 kg) and stands on 66.9 in x 103.5 in of floor. Chips are flushed to the centre automatically and carried by conveyor to a collector at the rear of the base, so leave access behind the machine. The control is a Fanuc 0i-M.

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What are the travels and table size of the EM1620L?

Travels are 20.5 in (520 mm) in X, 14.5 in (368 mm) in Y and 15.0 in (380 mm) in Z. The table is 27.6 in x 12.6 in (700 x 320 mm) and carries 550 lb (250 kg). Spindle nose to table distance is 5.9 in to 20.9 in (150 to 530 mm).

02 How does the EM1620L differ from the QP1620-L?

Both have the same travels, table and weight. The EM1620L has a 24+1 tool changer at 3 sec tool-to-tool and a 10,000 rpm spindle. The QP1620-L has a 20+1 changer at 1 sec, a direct drive option of 150 to 15,000 rpm, and can be had with a #30 spindle.

03 What spindle does the EM1620L use?

The spindle taper is #40 Big Plus and the spindle diameter is 2.4 in (60 mm). The speed row lists 10,000 rpm for the belt drive and 10,000 rpm for the direct drive. Tool shank is BT40, with CT40 or DIN40 as options.

04 How are chips removed?

According to Chevalier, an automatic chip flushing system moves cutting chips to the center and the chip conveyor delivers them to the chip collector, which is located at the rear of the machine base. Allow room behind the machine to empty it.
