Overview

The AWEA AF-1400MAX is the entry to the MAX group of the AF series, a set of three C-frame vertical machining centers with 800 mm (31.5 in) of travel in both Y and Z. X travel on this model is 1,400 mm (55.1 in). The table is 1,500 x 800 mm (59.1 x 31.5 in) and takes 1,200 kg (2,646 lb).

An 800 mm Y stroke on a C-frame puts the saddle a long way out. AWEA's answer is structural: the saddle travel of the MAX models is supported by four linear guideways, and the bed is extended to match the saddle's travel so the saddle does not overhang. The result is a machine of 14,000 kg (30,864 lb), heavier by a wide margin than the AF-1400II with its 8,100 kg (17,857 lb).

Height is the other gain. The spindle nose travels between 160 and 960 mm (6.3 ~ 37.8 in) above the table, and the spindle center is 903 mm (35.6 in) from the column. Deep die blocks, tall weldments and parts on a trunnion have room here that no AF-II model gives.

Pace is traded for that reach: 30 m/min (1,181 ipm) rapids in X and Y, 24 m/min (945 ipm) in Z and a 12 m/min (472 ipm) cutting feed rate. The standard spindle is the direct-drive 12,000 rpm BT40 unit with an 11 / 15 kW (14.8 / 20.1 hp) motor, and BT50 is optional. T-slots are 18 mm on a 150 mm pitch. The machine needs 40 kVA and carries a 610 liter coolant tank.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 800 mm (31.5 in) of travel in both Y and Z on a C-frame machine
  • Saddle supported by four linear guideways on an extended bed to avoid overhang
  • Spindle nose to table distance of 160 ~ 960 mm (6.3 ~ 37.8 in) for tall work
  • 14,000 kg (30,864 lb) of machine weight behind a 1,400 mm (55.1 in) X travel
  • BT50 option alongside the standard 12,000 rpm direct-drive BT40 spindle

Limitations

  • Rapids of 30 m/min (1,181 ipm) in X and Y are well below the 48 m/min (1,890 ipm) of the AF-1400II
  • Cutting feed rate is limited to 12 m/min (472 ipm)
  • Table load of 1,200 kg (2,646 lb) is the lowest of the three MAX models
  • Requires 40 kVA and a foundation suited to 14,000 kg (30,864 lb)
06

Best For

Deep die and mold blocks needing 800 mm (31.5 in) of Z Wide parts that need the full 800 mm (31.5 in) of Y travel Tall fixtures or rotary setups under a 960 mm spindle height Heavier cutting with the optional BT50 spindle

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What does MAX mean on the AWEA AF-1400MAX?

AWEA does not define the word, but its tables show what changes. The three MAX models have 800 mm (31.5 in) of Y and Z travel, a spindle nose to table range of 160 ~ 960 mm (6.3 ~ 37.8 in), four linear guideways under the saddle and much higher machine weights. The AF-1400MAX weighs 14,000 kg (30,864 lb).

02 What are the travels and table size of the AF-1400MAX?

Travels are 1,400 mm (55.1 in) in X and 800 mm (31.5 in) in each of Y and Z. The table measures 1,500 x 800 mm (59.1 x 31.5 in), has five 18 mm T-slots at a 150 mm pitch and is rated for 1,200 kg (2,646 lb).

03 Why is the AF-1400MAX so much heavier than the AF-1400II?

The AF-1400MAX weighs 14,000 kg (30,864 lb) and the AF-1400II 8,100 kg (17,857 lb). AWEA states that on the MAX models the saddle is carried on four linear guideways and that the bed is extended according to the saddle's travel range to avoid overhang. The longer Y and Z strokes, 800 mm (31.5 in) each, need that larger structure.

04 What spindle options exist for the AF-1400MAX?

Standard is a direct-drive 12,000 rpm BT40 spindle with an 11 / 15 kW (14.8 / 20.1 hp) motor, and the table lists BT50 as an option. For the series AWEA also describes high torque gear spindles, 8,000 rpm in BT40 with 280 Nm at 375 rpm and 6,000 rpm in BT50 with 382 Nm at 375 rpm, each paired with a box way Z-axis. Confirm applicability with AWEA.

05 What are the feed rates of the AF-1400MAX?

Rapid feed is 30 m/min (1,181 ipm) on X and Y and 24 m/min (945 ipm) on Z. The cutting feed rate is 12 m/min (472 ipm). Positioning accuracy is listed at 0.008 mm and repeatability at 0.006 mm under ISO230-2.
