Overview

The Huron K2X 10 is a high-speed three-axis portal machining centre built around an 18,000 rpm HSK 63-A spindle and 60 m/min rapids. Travels are 1,000 x 800 x 500 mm (39.4 x 31.5 x 19.7 in). Huron states positioning of 0.004 mm and repeatability of 0.002 mm on all three linear axes, the tightest figures in its three-axis portal line.

KX is the name Huron gave its first portal-structured machine, and the company still presents the series as its concept for machining complex parts along three axes from roughing to finishing, especially 3D shapes for moulds, forgings and tooling. The K2X 10 is the smallest current member. Its frame is ribbed cast iron, anchored to the floor.

The spindle delivers 30 kW and 110 Nm with a characteristic speed of 3,400 rpm. Full power arriving that early suits hard milling of tool steel with small-diameter cutters at high feed. The tool changer holds 36 tools up to 90 mm in diameter, 300 mm long and 10 kg.

The table is 1,150 x 800 mm and rated for 1,000 kg (2,205 lb). Z travel is 500 mm, which is adequate for cavity plates and inserts but short for tall parts. The machine weighs 12,500 kg (27,557 lb) and needs 5,930 x 3,520 mm with doors open and conveyor.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Positioning of 0.004 mm and repeatability of 0.002 mm on X, Y and Z
  • 60 m/min rapid traverse on all three axes
  • 18,000 rpm HSK 63-A spindle with 30 kW and 110 Nm
  • 12,500 kg (27,557 lb) portal frame for a 1,000 x 800 mm working area
  • 36 tool housings with a 10 kg tool weight limit

Limitations

  • Z travel is 500 mm, less than the 700 mm of the KX 30
  • Table load is 1,000 kg (2,205 lb), half the rating of the K2X 20
  • 110 Nm of torque limits large-diameter roughing tools
  • Requires floor anchoring to hold its stated geometry

Best For

High-speed finishing of mould cavities and cores Hard milling of tool steel inserts Forging dies and electrodes within 1,000 x 800 x 500 mm Work that depends on 0.002 mm repeatability

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What are the travels and table size of the Huron K2X 10?

X, Y and Z travels are 1,000, 800 and 500 mm. The table is 1,150 x 800 mm (45.3 x 31.5 in) with an admissible load of 1,000 kg (2,205 lb).

02 How accurate is the K2X 10?

Huron states positioning of 0.004 mm and repeatability of 0.002 mm on X, Y and Z. For comparison, the K2X 20 is listed at 0.005 mm and 0.003 mm, so the smaller machine is the more accurate of the two on paper.

03 What spindle does the K2X 10 have?

An HSK 63-A spindle that runs to 18,000 rpm, rated 30 kW and 110 Nm. The characteristic speed is 3,400 rpm. The same spindle is listed for the K2X 20 and the KX 30.

04 How does the K2X 10 differ from the K2X 10 Five?

The K2X 10 is a three-axis machine with a fixed 1,150 x 800 mm table. The K2X 10 Five has a two-axis rotating table of 630 mm diameter for five-axis work, with 900 x 900 x 500 mm travels and 50 m/min rapids. Spindle and tool changer figures are the same.
