Price estimate
We do not have a price for the Hartford MCW-8550 that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
The Hartford MCW-8550 is the smallest model of the MCW series, which Hartford describes as a Moving Crossbeam Moving Column Machining Center. Smallest is relative: X travel is 8,000 mm (315.0 in), Y travel 5,500 mm (216.5 in), and the table measures 8,000 x 4,000 mm (315.0 x 157.5 in).
Two things set the MCW apart from Hartford's HSA double-column machines. The columns travel along X while the workpiece stays put, so the table is rated per area, 3,000 kg/m², instead of by a total weight. And the cross-beam moves vertically on a W axis with 1,800 mm of travel, or 2,100 mm as an option, in addition to the 1,000 mm Z travel of the ram.
For comparison, the largest moving-table model, the HSA-836EAY, has the same 8,000 mm of X but 4,400 mm (173.2 in) of Y and a table 3,000 mm wide. Where a part outgrows that in width or height, the MCW-8550 is the next step.
The spindle is #50. Hartford offers its own gear head at 6,000 or 8,000 rpm and an i-Tech hybrid spindle at 10,000 rpm, with 18.5 / 22 kW or optionally 30 / 35 kW. The chain type magazine holds 40 tools, or 62.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- Fixed table of 8,000 x 4,000 mm (315.0 x 157.5 in); the columns move, not the part
- W axis raises the cross-beam through 1,800 mm, optionally 2,100 mm
- 5,500 mm (216.5 in) of Y travel
- Gear head at 6,000 / 8,000 rpm or hybrid spindle at 10,000 rpm
Limitations
- Table load is given per area, 3,000 kg/m², so concentrated heavy parts need checking
- Standard Z travel is 1,000 mm; 1,200 mm and 1,400 mm are options
- The shortest MCW still needs space for 8,000 mm of column travel plus overrun

Frequently Asked Questions
01
Hartford calls it a Moving Crossbeam Moving Column Machining Center. The columns travel 8,000 mm (315.0 in) along a fixed table, the spindle moves 5,500 mm (216.5 in) in Y, and the cross-beam itself moves vertically on a W axis.
02
The rating is 3,000 kg/m². Because the table is fixed, Hartford gives a load per square metre and no total, so the permissible weight depends on the footprint of the part and its fixtures on the 8,000 x 4,000 mm table.
03
Two axes share it. Z travel is 1,000 mm, with 1,200 mm and 1,400 mm as options, and the W axis moves the cross-beam 1,800 mm, or 2,100 mm as an option.
