Overview
The Tsugami VA3 is the foundational model in Tsugami's compact high-speed VMC lineup, delivering 20,000 RPM BT30 performance in a footprint that's hard to beat. It shares DNA with the VA3S but comes in at a slightly different configuration, making it the entry point for shops that want Tsugami precision in a small, fast package.
The VA3 offers 500 x 400 x 350mm axis travels on a 650 x 400mm table, with the Z-axis giving you an extra 50mm over the VA3S. That extra depth matters when you're machining taller fixtures or need more clearance for workholding. The 20,000 RPM spindle with 9.0/3.7 kW motor handles the high surface speeds required for efficient small-diameter end milling, micro-drilling, and engraving operations.
Rapid traverse rates of 48 m/min on all axes keep the tool moving between features as fast as the spindle can cut them. The 20+1 ATC swaps tools quickly, and through-spindle high-pressure coolant is available for demanding drilling applications. The 250 kg table load is sized right for the small-to-medium parts this machine excels at -- precision housings, electronic enclosures, instrument plates, and similar components.
The FANUC 0i-MF control provides solid conversational and G-code programming, with 4th-axis capability available for indexed and simultaneous work. At 2,600 kg (5,732 lbs) and 1,500 x 2,180mm footprint, the VA3 takes up minimal floor space while delivering production-ready performance. A 130-liter coolant tank keeps things running cool during extended cuts. For shops doing high-speed work on aluminum, brass, and similar materials with parts under 500mm in any dimension, the VA3 is one of the most efficient machines in its class.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- 20,000 RPM BT30 spindle provides the speed needed for efficient small-tool machining in aluminum, brass, and light alloys
- 48 m/min rapid traverse on all axes keeps non-cutting time to a minimum during complex multi-tool programs
- 350mm Z-axis travel gives 50mm more depth than the VA3S, useful for taller fixtures and workpieces
- Compact 1,500 x 2,180mm footprint is among the smallest in its class for the capability provided
- Through-spindle high-pressure coolant option supports demanding deep-hole drilling applications
- Accessible price point makes high-speed precision machining available to smaller shops
Limitations
- BT30 spindle taper limits tool size and cutting forces for heavier materials like stainless steel
- 250 kg table load restricts fixturing to lighter setups appropriate for small-part production
- 130-liter coolant tank may need more frequent topping off during sustained high-speed machining
- Smaller installed base compared to Haas or Brother high-speed VMCs may affect resale value

Frequently Asked Questions
01
The VA3 and VA3S share the same 20,000 RPM BT30 spindle and 500 x 400mm X/Y travels. The VA3 has 350mm Z-travel (vs 300mm on the VA3S), a slightly different table size (650 x 400mm vs 660 x 400mm), and different coolant tank capacity. The VA3S typically has the newer FANUC 0i-MF Plus control. Both machines deliver similar performance -- check with your dealer for current production specifications.
02
The VA3 can machine steel with smaller tools (under 12mm diameter) at appropriate feeds and speeds. The BT30 spindle handles the forces for light steel work, but this isn't a steel roughing machine. For regular steel work, consider the VA4-II with its BBT40 spindle and 18.5 kW motor. The VA3 excels at high-speed work in aluminum, brass, copper, plastics, and similar materials.
03
Both are compact high-speed BT30 machining centers targeting similar applications. Brother's Speedio line is known for extremely fast tool changes (under 1 second chip-to-chip) and high rapids. The VA3 matches on spindle speed at 20,000 RPM and rapids at 48 m/min. Brother has a larger North American installed base, while the VA3 benefits from Tsugami's precision machine heritage. Both are excellent choices for high-speed small-part work.
04
For most small-part work, 130 liters is adequate. During sustained high-speed aluminum machining with flood coolant, you'll consume coolant faster and may need to top off more frequently than with a larger tank. Using mist coolant or MQL (minimum quantity lubrication) reduces coolant consumption significantly and is common on high-speed BT30 machines.
05
With proper tooling and programming, the VA3 routinely achieves Ra 0.4 micrometers (16 microinch) finishes in aluminum. The 20,000 RPM spindle speed allows high surface footage with small step-overs for excellent 3D contour finishes. For mirror finishes (Ra 0.1-0.2 μm), use diamond-coated or PCD tools at full speed with light finishing passes.
