Price estimate
We do not have a price for the AXA PFZ 40 that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
The AXA PFZ 40 is a large gantry machining centre sold by dimension. AXA does not publish one size but a range for each axis: X from 3,000 mm to 10,000 mm (118.1 to 393.7 in), Y from 1,500 mm to 3,000 mm and Z from 800 mm to 1,500 mm. The table is as long as the X travel and between 1,500 mm and 3,000 mm wide. The spindle is vertical and, on this model, SK 40.
An SK 40 spindle on a machine of this size sounds mismatched, but it fits a clear kind of work: very large parts in aluminium or with light cuts, where reach matters more than torque. The standard drive no. 110 gives 143 Nm and 30 kW at 40% DC. Options are no. 100 with up to 15,000 rpm, no. 111 with 191 Nm and no. 113 with 255 Nm.
Speed is not the point of a PFZ. Rapids are 15/15/10 m/min in X/Y/Z, with 20/20/15 m/min as an optional feature, and positioning accuracy is ± 0.02 mm per 1,000 mm, with increased accuracy on request. The guideways are hardened steel slideways with Turcite coatings, which AXA credits with high rigidity and vibration absorption, and the linear axes are driven by ball screws or rack and pinion.
A solid covering is standard even in the basic version, according to AXA, and doors and bellows open wide for crane loading. The table has 22 mm T-slots at 660 mm spacing and is rated at 1,500 kg/m². AXA also shows the PFZ built without a machine table and as a pallet machine.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- Work envelope to order: X 3,000 to 10,000 mm, Y 1,500 to 3,000 mm, Z 800 to 1,500 mm
- Table up to 3,000 mm wide and as long as the X travel, rated at 1,500 kg/m²
- Slideways with Turcite coatings for rigidity and vibration absorption
- Stationary tool changer with tool transfer set centrally in the X-axis
- Solid covering as standard, with wide doors and opening bellows for crane loading
Limitations
- SK 40 spindle with 143 Nm as standard and 255 Nm at most
- Rapid traverse of 15/15/10 m/min, or 20/20/15 m/min as an option
- Standard positioning accuracy of ± 0.02 mm per 1,000 mm
- Vertical spindle only; side faces need angular heads
- Feed force of 9,000 N, less than the 12,000 N of the PFZ 50

Frequently Asked Questions
01
AXA gives ranges, not fixed sizes. X travel is 3,000 mm to 10,000 mm, Y is 1,500 mm to 3,000 mm and Z is 800 mm to 1,500 mm. Table width is 1,500 mm to 3,000 mm and table length approximately equals the X travel. The data sheet says extensions and modifications are available on request.
02
The spindle and the forces around it. The PFZ 50 has an SK 50 taper, a 540 Nm standard drive, a 12,000 N feed force and an optional table rating of 2,000 kg/m². The PFZ 40 has SK 40, 143 Nm, 9,000 N and 1,500 kg/m². The travel ranges are the same.
03
22 pockets as standard. The row for the optional expansion reads "60 (90)". Tools can be 85 mm in diameter, 135 mm with free adjacent pockets, and 400 mm long. The changer is stationary, which AXA says allows very long chains without restricting machine dynamics and precision.
04
The main spindle is set vertically. AXA states that the implementation of angular heads enables machining on the side surfaces. For 5-side machining with a 2-axis tilting head, AXA builds the UPFZ 40 on the same travel ranges in X and Z.
