How much does the AWEA FM-87 cost?
Price estimate
We do not have a price for the AWEA FM-87 that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
The AWEA FM-87 is a compact bridge-type machining center for mold work: 800 mm (31.5 in) of X, 700 mm (27.6 in) of Y and 420 mm (16.5 in) of Z under a built-in 20,000 rpm BT40 spindle. AWEA labels it a high speed moldmaking machine and names plastic die and mold work, automotive light molds and precision parts among its uses.
Its proportions point the same way. Y is nearly as long as X, and the 850 x 700 mm (33.5 x 27.6 in) table is close to square, a shape that fits mold blocks and inserts better than long, narrow parts. The AF-800II, AWEA's C-frame vertical with the same 800 mm X stroke, has 510 mm (20.1 in) of Y and a 500 kg (1,102 lb) table. The FM-87 carries 800 kg (1,764 lb) and weighs 7,000 kg (15,432 lb), against 5,000 kg (11,023 lb) for the AF-800II.
Oil-air lubrication feeds the spindle, which is driven by a 15 / 18.5 kW (20.1 / 24.8 hp) motor. The maker's sample machine pairs the MIRL-Neo built-in spindle with a FANUC Oi-MD controller, and AWEA states that the machine body is kept at the same temperature with an accuracy of ±0.2°C. A spindle thermal variation probe with compensation is an option, not part of the base machine. Rapid traverse is 30 m/min (1,181 ipm) on all three axes and the cutting feed rate reaches 24 m/min (945 ipm), so a finishing pass with a small cutter can run at most of the rapid rate.
The magazine is where the specialisation shows. It is listed as Umbrella Type 20T, with no tool larger than Ø35 mm (Ø1.4 in), longer than 220 mm (8.7 in) or heavier than 7 kg (15 lb). Face mills and large drills are out. Accuracy under VDI 3441 is 0.008 mm for positioning and 0.004 mm for repeatability. Plan for 40 KVA of power, air at 6 kg/cm² and a 359 L coolant tank.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- Built-in 20,000 rpm BT40 spindle with oil-air lubrication and a 15 / 18.5 kW (20.1 / 24.8 hp) motor
- 700 mm (27.6 in) of Y on an 800 mm (31.5 in) X stroke, where the AF-800II has 510 mm (20.1 in)
- Cutting feed rate of 24 m/min (945 ipm), close to the 30 m/min (1,181 ipm) rapid traverse
- 800 kg (1,764 lb) table load on an 850 x 700 mm (33.5 x 27.6 in) table
- Repeatability of 0.004 mm and positioning accuracy of 0.008 mm, both stated to VDI 3441
- Machine body temperature held with an accuracy of ±0.2°C, according to AWEA
Limitations
- Tool diameter is limited to Ø35 mm (Ø1.4 in), which excludes face mills and most roughing cutters
- The magazine is listed as Umbrella Type 20T, and the table shows no larger alternative
- Z travel is 420 mm (16.5 in), less than the 510 mm (20.1 in) of the AF-800II
- Spindle thermal variation probe and compensation is an option
- 40 KVA power requirement, where the AF-800II is listed at 25 kVA

Frequently Asked Questions
01
It is a bridge-type machine in a vertical machining center's size class. AWEA describes a solid bridge-type structure, and the travels are 800 x 700 x 420 mm, with a Y stroke far longer than a C-frame machine of this X travel usually has. The AF-800II, for comparison, has 510 mm (20.1 in) of Y on the same 800 mm (31.5 in) of X.
02
A built-in 20,000 rpm spindle with a BT40 taper, oil-air lubrication and a 15 / 18.5 kW (20.1 / 24.8 hp) motor. AWEA says its sample machine carries the MIRL-Neo built-in high speed spindle developed by ITRI, Taiwan. The maker's inspection of each high speed spindle covers dynamic balance, vibration, noise, temperature rise, thermal variation and run-out.
03
Only with small tools. The magazine accepts nothing over Ø35 mm (Ø1.4 in) in diameter or 7 kg (15 lb) in weight, so large face mills and indexable roughers cannot be loaded. The machine suits semi-finishing and finishing at high spindle speed and feeds up to 24 m/min (945 ipm); heavy stock removal belongs on another machine.
04
AWEA states that the series is equipped with a FANUC controller and the software of its Optimal Parameter System. The sample machine shown by the maker has a FANUC Oi-MD controller. The specification table itself has no control row, so confirm the exact control model when ordering.
05
The table lists a 40 KVA power requirement, compressed air at 6 kg/cm² and a coolant tank of 359 L. The machine weighs 7,000 kg (15,432 lb). The clearance from spindle nose to table runs from 150 ~ 570 mm (5.9 ~ 22.4 in), which together with the 220 mm (8.7 in) tool length limit sets how tall a mold block can be.
