Overview

At 16,000 mm (629.9 in) of X travel the Hartford MCW-16550 is one of the long models of the MCW moving-column series. Y travel is 5,500 mm (216.5 in) and the fixed table measures 16,000 x 4,000 mm (629.9 x 157.5 in), four times as long as it is wide.

A table like that is seldom filled by one part. More often it holds two or three workpieces end to end, or one being machined while the next is set up at the far end, which a fixed table permits because nothing on it moves. Hartford's remark that the W axis can be positioned anywhere, without restriction of the machining area, fits this way of working: the beam height can be changed between parts of different size.

For long unattended cycles the tool supply matters. The chain type magazine carries 40 tools, or 62 as an option, and the head changer stores its angular heads in an independent magazine behind a door that opens only for a change.

The table is rated at 3,000 kg/m². Z travel is 1,000 mm, with 1,200 and 1,400 mm as options; W travel is 1,800 mm, optionally 2,100 mm. A #50 gear head runs 6,000 or 8,000 rpm, and the hybrid spindle 10,000 rpm.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 16,000 x 4,000 mm (629.9 x 157.5 in) fixed table, long enough for several setups
  • Cross-beam height adjustable between parts over 1,800 mm of W travel
  • Chain type magazine for 40 or 62 tools
  • Heads stored in a closed, independent magazine

Limitations

  • Y travel of 5,500 mm (216.5 in) on a very long machine
  • Rated 3,000 kg/m²; no total load figure
  • Hartford's table does not give rapid or feed rates for the 16,000 mm X axis

Best For

Two or three large parts set up end to end Rail vehicle, crane and bridge components Long cycles with many tools and head changes

Frequently Asked Questions

01 Can several parts be set up at once on the MCW-16550?

The fixed table is 16,000 x 4,000 mm (629.9 x 157.5 in), so parts can be placed in a row along X. Hartford states that the W axis may be positioned at random without restriction of the machining area, which lets the beam height suit each part.

02 What are the travels of the MCW-16550?

X 16,000 mm (629.9 in), Y 5,500 mm (216.5 in), Z 1,000 mm with options of 1,200 and 1,400 mm, and W 1,800 mm with a 2,100 mm option.

03 How do the long x550 models differ from one another?

Only in X travel and table length. The MCW-14550 has 14,000 mm (551.2 in), the MCW-16550 has 16,000 mm (629.9 in) and the MCW-18550 has 18,000 mm (708.7 in). All three have a table 4,000 mm wide.

04 Which spindle speeds are available on the MCW-16550?

6,000 or 8,000 rpm with the gear head and 10,000 rpm with the hybrid spindle. The taper is #50 and power is 18.5 / 22 kW, with 30 / 35 kW optional.
