Price estimate
We do not have a price for the Colchester Storm VH-1100 that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
At the Colchester Storm VH-1100 the box-way Storm range changes character. Spindle power steps up to 15 kW (20.1 hp), Y travel jumps to 700 mm (27.6 in) and the table load reaches 1,300 kg (2,866 lb). X travel is 1,100 mm (43.3 in), Z travel 710 mm (28.0 in), and the table is 1,300 x 650 mm (51.2 x 25.6 in).
Everything below this model in the VH series, up to the Storm VH-1000, has 11 kW (14.8 hp) and no more than 510 mm (20.1 in) of Y. Here the casting is clearly a larger family, built for die and mould work, heavy fixtures and big castings. The extra power matters most with large face mills and big indexable drills, which a BT40 spindle can drive only if the motor behind it keeps up.
The opening under the spindle is tall, from 130 mm (5.1 in) to 840 mm (33.1 in). With 710 mm (28.0 in) of Z that allows a deep mould cavity to be reached with long tools, or a tall casting to be faced on top. The table has 5 T-slots of 18 mm (0.7 in).
Top speed remains 10,000 rpm and the changer still holds 24 tools on twin arms. For mould finishing those two figures are adequate, not generous, so long finishing programs benefit from the optional tool setting probe to manage wear. Through spindle coolant, also optional, is close to essential for the deep drilling a machine like this attracts. A geared head can be specified in place of the standard spindle.
