We do not have a price for the Fehlmann VERSA 743 that we can stand behind, so we show no number. Configuration, options and installation move the final price a long way: a quote is the reliable figure.
Overview
The Fehlmann VERSA 743 is a 3-axis portal machining center with a fixed table. The clamping surface measures 770 x 660 mm (30.3 x 26.0 in), the table load is 800 kg (1,764 lb), and the travels are 500 mm (19.7 in) in X, 650 mm (25.6 in) in Y and 420 mm (16.5 in) in Z.
It shares its travels, its spindle list and its 10,000 kg (22,046 lb) weight with the 5-axis VERSA 745; what changes is the table. A plain table in place of the rotary tilting unit suits plates, mould bases and rows of vices, and at 770 x 660 mm the surface is larger than the X and Y travel, which leaves a margin for clamps outside the cutting area.
Spindle selection decides what kind of 3-axis machine this is. With the 50 - 14,000 rpm or the 50 - 18,000 rpm spindle, both 26.3 kW (35.3 hp) at S6 (40% ED), it is set up for heavier cuts in steel. The 50 - 24,000 rpm version keeps 25 kW (33.5 hp). The 50 - 30,000 rpm version drops to 13.7 kW (18.4 hp) and is the one for small-diameter finishing tools.
The base is grey cast iron, the slides and the machine structure are cooled, and Fehlmann points out that only 2 axes are used for cutting. Tool capacity is 42 in the basic chain magazine and 74 upgraded, and the optional rack magazine holds a further 112 up to 600 tools depending on the holder. Loading is from the front or by crane through the roof, with the right side left free for automation. The footprint is 2.43 x 2.73 m at a height of 3.25 m. A Heidenhain TNC7 runs the machine.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- 770 x 660 mm (30.3 x 26.0 in) clamping surface carrying up to 800 kg (1,764 lb)
- Spindle versions with 26.3 kW (35.3 hp) at 50 - 14,000 rpm or 50 - 18,000 rpm
- Feed rate / rapid feed row reaches 50,000 mm/min (1,969 ipm)
- 42-tool chain magazine upgradable to 74, plus an optional rack magazine for 112 up to 600 additional tools
- Door opens into the roof for crane loading, and the right side is left free for robot automation
Limitations
- No rotary axes in the listed specification; 5-axis work on these travels is what the VERSA 745 is for
- Z travel is 420 mm (16.5 in) with 100 - 520 mm between table and spindle nose, which limits tall parts and long tools together
- The machine weighs 10,000 kg (22,046 lb) and is 3.25 m high
- No torque or taper figure in the table, and high-pressure coolant with chip conveyor is an option

Frequently Asked Questions
01
The specification gives a clamping surface of 770 x 660 mm (30.3 x 26.0 in) and a maximum table load of 800 kg (1,764 lb). X and Y travel are 500 mm and 650 mm, so the table is larger than the area the spindle covers, and fixtures can extend beyond the cut.
02
No. Fehlmann describes it as a 3-axis machining center with a fixed table, and its specification lists only X, Y and Z travels of 500, 650 and 420 mm. The 5-axis machine on the same travels is the VERSA 745, which has a rotary tilting table for workpieces of 500 mm diameter and 400 mm height.
03
It depends on the material. The 14,000 and 18,000 rpm spindles are both rated 26.3 kW (35.3 hp), the 24,000 rpm spindle 25 kW (33.5 hp) and the 30,000 rpm spindle 13.7 kW (18.4 hp), all at S6 (40% ED). The table does not give torque, so ask for the torque curve of the spindle you are considering.
04
Space of 2.43 m in width and 2.73 m in depth, 3.25 m of height plus clearance if a crane is to load through the roof door, and a floor for 10,000 kg (22,046 lb). The gray cast iron base stands on a three-point support system. Leave the right side open if a robot is planned.
05
The VERSA 943 is the larger 3-axis machine, with 650 x 800 x 500 mm of travel, an 870 x 760 mm clamping surface and a 1,000 kg table load, against 500 x 650 x 420 mm, 770 x 660 mm and 800 kg here. The VERSA 943 also weighs more, at 11,800 kg.
