Overview

The Johnford DMC-5100SH is the 50-taper, five-metre member of the DMC-S family. Its table is 5,200 x 1,500 mm (204.7 x 59 in) and takes 12,000 kg (26,400 lb). X travel is 5,100 mm (200.7 in).

A part five metres long and under twelve tonnes describes a lot of heavy fabrication: crane girders, press side frames, shear and brake beams, the beds of other machine tools. They arrive as weldments or castings with scale and uneven stock, and the first operation is usually a heavy facing cut. For that the SH brings a BT-50 / CAT-50 spindle with a 22 / 26 kW (29.5 / 34.9 hp) motor and a Hi Lo Gear, turning at up to 6,000 rpm.

Cross travel is 1,778 mm (70 in) and vertical travel 800 mm (31.5 in). The second figure is the tighter constraint on fabricated beams, which are often tall. Spindle nose to table distance is 150~950 mm (5.9~37.4 in), and a 400 mm (15.7 in) tool uses a good part of it. The series options include universal, orthogonal, NC 2-Axis and 5-Face milling heads for reaching the sides, each of which takes its own share of that height.

Speed is not the point of this machine: 12 / 12 / 12 m/min (472 / 472 / 472 ipm) rapids, 10,000 mm/min (394 ipm) maximum cutting feed. It occupies 13,666 x 4,600 x 4,013 mm (538 x 181.1 x 158 in) and weighs 42,100 kg (92,620 lb), the same as the 40-taper DMC-5100S.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 12,000 kg (26,400 lb) on a 5,200 x 1,500 mm (204.7 x 59 in) table
  • Geared BT-50 / CAT-50 spindle with 22 / 26 kW (29.5 / 34.9 hp)
  • 5,100 mm (200.7 in) of X travel in a fixed-column design
  • Optional built-in spindles at 10,000 rpm up to 31 / 40 kW (41.6 / 53.6 hp)

Limitations

  • 800 mm (31.5 in) of Z and at most 950 mm (37.4 in) under the spindle nose for tall fabrications
  • 6,000 rpm with the standard drive
  • Rapid traverse of 12 m/min (472 ipm) on all axes
  • Side machining requires an optional milling head
06

Best For

Facing and boring weldments and castings up to five metres long Press frames, beams and machine beds within 12,000 kg (26,400 lb) Heavy cuts with face mills up to Ø200 mm (Ø7.8 in)

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What is the table load of the DMC-5100SH?

12,000 kg (26,400 lb). The shorter DMC-4100SH is rated 10,000 kg (22,000 lb) and the longer DMC-6100SH 14,000 kg (30,800 lb), so the rating rises with length from this model on.

02 How tall a workpiece can the DMC-5100SH machine?

The spindle nose travels between 150 and 950 mm (5.9~37.4 in) above the table and Z travel is 800 mm (31.5 in). The length of the tool, up to 400 mm (15.7 in), and any optional milling head reduce the usable height.

03 Which taper does the DMC-5100SH use?

BT-50 / CAT-50 as standard and HSK A100 as an option. The spindle bearing diameter is 90 mm (3.5 in), compared with 70 mm (2.8 in) on the 40-taper DMC-5100S.

04 What does the standard DMC-5100SH include?

A Fanuc 0i-MF PLUS control with Manual Guide i, a full enclosure, a 24-tool arm type ATC, rigid tapping, an oil cooler for spindle and gearbox, automatic centralized lubrication with alarms, and two screw type plus one chain type chip conveyor.
