Overview

Hartford calls the S PLUS line its Production Center, and the S PLUS-8 is the 800 mm member: a linear-guideway vertical machining center with 800 mm (31.5 in) of X travel, 520 mm (20.5 in) of Y, 550 mm (21.7 in) of Z and a #40 spindle.

For a machine of this size the spindle motor list is generous. It begins at 7.5 / 11 kW and continues to 11 / 15 kW and 15 / 18.5 kW as options (Cont. / 30 min). The LG-800, which has the same X travel, lists 5.5 / 7.5 / 11 kW. Speeds are 8,000 / 10,000 / 12,000 rpm from the pulley spindle and 10,000 / 12,000 / 15,000 rpm from the DDS spindle.

Hartford adds two spindle details on this model's page. Bearings are lubricated by an oil-air system, which the maker says makes the spindle capable of long-term running. And the spindle has a two-face binding design, the dual contact of taper and flange, for cutting capability and accuracy.

The work area is a 950 x 520 mm (37.4 x 20.5 in) table with five T-slots and a 500 kg (1,102 lb) average load. Tools are BT40 in a 24-pocket arm-type magazine, with 30 pockets as the alternative, and the minimum tool change time is 1.38 secs. Stated accuracy under Hartford's MGPS standard is positioning within 8μm and repeatability within 5μm.

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What is the work envelope of the Hartford S PLUS-8?

800 mm (31.5 in) in X, 520 mm (20.5 in) in Y and 550 mm (21.7 in) in Z. The table is 950 x 520 mm (37.4 x 20.5 in), has T-slots listed as 18 x 100 (5) mm and carries an average load of 500 kg (1,102 lb).

02 How is the S PLUS-8 different from the LG-800?

Both have 800 mm (31.5 in) of X travel and a #40 spindle with the same speed lists. The S PLUS-8 has stronger motor options, starting at 7.5 / 11 kW, a slightly deeper Y stroke of 520 mm (20.5 in) and a shorter Z. The LG-800 has 510 mm (20.1 in) of Y and 630 mm (24.8 in) of Z.

03 How is the S PLUS-8 spindle lubricated?

By oil-air lubrication. Hartford states that the spindle bearing is lubricated by lubrication oil and that the spindle is capable of long term running. The page also describes a two face binding design on the spindle to raise cutting capability and machining accuracy.

04 How many tools does the S PLUS-8 hold and how fast is the change?

The ATC row reads A:24 (30) pcs, an arm-type changer with 24 pockets or 30. Hartford gives the minimum tool change time as 1.38 secs. Shanks are BT40, with BBT, CAT and DIN listed as alternatives.
