Overview

The AWEA BM-2500 MAX is the largest C-frame vertical machining center in AWEA's listing: 2,500 mm (98.4 in) of X travel, 1,000 mm (39.4 in) of Y and 1,000 mm (39.4 in) of Z. Its table, 2,700 x 1,000 mm (106.3 x 39.4 in), is rated for 4,000 kg (8,818 lb). The machine weighs 22,000 kg (48,501 lb).

Four tonnes on a moving table is bridge-mill territory, and that is the comparison a buyer should make. A bridge type machine carries the load on a table that moves in one axis only. Here the table moves in X on a saddle that moves in Y, so AWEA puts 6 guideways under the table base to keep it supported at the ends of travel. What the C-frame gives back is an open front and a lower, more compact machine.

Spindle data match the BM-2100 MAX: a BT50 gear spindle, 6,000 rpm, 15 / 18.5 kW (20.1 / 24.8 hp). So do the feeds, at 15 m/min (591 ipm) for X and Y rapids, 12 m/min (472 ipm) for Z and 1 - 12 m/min (39 - 472 ipm) in the cut. Listed positioning accuracy is 0.008 mm with 0.006 mm repeatability, the same values AWEA prints for the smallest BM.

The coolant tank holds 1,040 liter, the only four-figure capacity in the series, and five screw type augers move chips out. The power requirement is 40 kVA. The control is the FANUC Oi -MF Plus.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 4,000 kg (8,818 lb) table load, the highest of AWEA's C-frame machines
  • 2,500 mm (98.4 in) of X travel with 1,000 mm (39.4 in) in Y and Z
  • 6 guideways under the table base against overhang
  • BT50 gear spindle rated 15 / 18.5 kW (20.1 / 24.8 hp)
  • 1,040 liter coolant tank and five chip augers

Limitations

  • X and Y rapids of 15 m/min (591 ipm)
  • Tool length limited to 250 mm (9.8 in), short for a 1,000 mm Z stroke
  • 6,000 rpm maximum spindle speed
  • 22,000 kg (48,501 lb) to install, on a 40 kVA supply

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What is the capacity of the AWEA BM-2500 MAX?

X, Y and Z travels are 2,500 mm (98.4 in), 1,000 mm (39.4 in) and 1,000 mm (39.4 in). The table measures 2,700 x 1,000 mm (106.3 x 39.4 in) and carries 4,000 kg (8,818 lb). The spindle nose to table distance is 200 ~ 1,200 mm (7.9 ~ 47.2 in).

02 How does the BM-2500 MAX compare with the BM-2100 MAX?

It is the longer version of the same frame. The BM-2100 MAX has 2,100 mm (82.7 in) of X, a 2,300 x 1,000 mm (90.6 x 39.4 in) table, a 3,000 kg (6,614 lb) rating and weighs 20,000 kg (44,092 lb). Spindle, Y and Z travel, feeds and tooling are the same on both.

03 Is the BM-2500 MAX a box-way machine?

Yes. AWEA states that the three axes of the series are equipped with box ways that are precisely ground and heat treated, and that the table base of the BM-2100MAX and BM-2500MAX runs on 6 guideways. A copper piping auto lubrication system meters oil to the slide ways and ball screws.

04 What does the BM-2500 MAX need for power, air and coolant?

A 40 kVA supply and 6 kg/cm² of pneumatic pressure. The coolant tank capacity is 1,040 liter. Machine weight is 22,000 kg (48,501 lb), so floor capacity and crane access should be settled before ordering.
