Overview

The DATRON MLmax Pro is a gantry machine for very long, flat work: 1,570 mm (61.8 in) of X travel, 3,160 mm (124.4 in) of Y travel and 245 mm (9.6 in) of Z. Its work envelope is 1,500 mm x 3,000 mm x 200 mm (59.1 in x 118.1 in x 7.9 in), where the 200 mm is the gantry clearance. The long axis is Y, and it is more than twice the 1,150 mm (45.3 in) of Y travel on the MLCube.

Workholding is built into the table. It is a steel table 35 mm thick with integrated conical threads, and DATRON lists up to 18 individually controllable vacuum fields. On a bed this long that matters: vacuum can be switched on only under the area a sheet or profile covers, and several shorter parts can be held in separate zones.

The base is described as a mass-optimized steel frame with UHPC casting, and the machine weighs approximately 8,000 kg (17,637 lb). Rapid traverse and cutting feed are listed at up to 50 m/min (1,969 ipm), which is what keeps non-cutting time down when the gantry has 3,160 mm to cover. The MLCube, for comparison, is listed at up to 22 m/min (866 ipm).

The spindle is an HF unit of 1.8 kW to 4.0 kW (2.4 hp to 5.4 hp) with a top speed of 48,000 rpm and an HSK-E 25 interface. The standard magazine holds 12 tools in HSK-E 25 holders, and a 36-tool magazine is optional. Three more items are extras: the tool length measurement probe, the DATRON 3D probe and the DATRON Axis4 for 3+1 work.

Control is DATRON next on a free-standing terminal with a 24-inch multi-touch display and an additional manual operating panel; a 24-inch display on the machine itself is optional. Without the terminal the machine measures 2,100 mm x 4,700 mm (82.7 in x 185.0 in) and is at most 1,870 mm (73.6 in) high.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 3,160 mm (124.4 in) of Y travel with a 1,500 mm x 3,000 mm (59.1 in x 118.1 in) working area
  • Rapid traverse and cutting feed up to 50 m/min (1,969 ipm), against up to 22 m/min (866 ipm) on the MLCube
  • Up to 18 individually controllable vacuum fields in a 35 mm thick steel table with integrated conical threads
  • HSK-E 25 spindle up to 48,000 rpm with 1.8 kW to 4.0 kW (2.4 hp to 5.4 hp)
  • Free-standing terminal with a 24-inch multi-touch display plus a manual operating panel

Limitations

  • Gantry clearance is 200 mm (7.9 in): long parts fit, tall ones do not
  • The standard magazine holds 12 tools and the optional one 36; the 60 or 143 stations offered on the MLCube are not listed here
  • The tool length measurement probe and the DATRON 3D probe are both optional
  • Needs a floor that carries approximately 8,000 kg (17,637 lb) over 2,100 mm x 4,700 mm (82.7 in x 185.0 in)
  • Spindle power tops out at 4.0 kW (5.4 hp), the same ceiling as the far smaller M8Cube

Frequently Asked Questions

01 How large a workpiece does the MLmax Pro take?

The work envelope is 1,500 mm x 3,000 mm x 200 mm (59.1 in x 118.1 in x 7.9 in). The 200 mm is the clearance under the gantry, so it limits the combined height of part and fixture. Axis travel is 1,570 mm (61.8 in) in X, 3,160 mm (124.4 in) in Y and 245 mm (9.6 in) in Z.

02 How is the workpiece held on the MLmax Pro?

The table is steel, 35 mm thick, with integrated conical threads for mechanical fixturing. DATRON also lists up to 18 individually controllable vacuum fields, so flat stock can be clamped by vacuum and only the fields under the material need to be active. The wording is 'up to', so confirm the number of fields on the machine you are quoted.

03 How fast do the axes of the MLmax Pro move?

Both rapid traverse and cutting feed rate are listed at up to 50 m/min (1,969 ipm). That is more than double the up to 22 m/min (866 ipm) listed for the MLCube, and it is relevant here because the Y axis travels 3,160 mm (124.4 in).

04 How many tools does the MLmax Pro hold?

The standard magazine holds 12 tools in HSK-E 25 tool holders. A 36-tool magazine is available as an option. Tool length measurement is by a probe that is also optional, so check that it is on the quotation if tools are to be measured on the machine.

05 What does the MLmax Pro weigh and how much room does it need?

It weighs approximately 8,000 kg (17,637 lb). The machine measures 2,100 mm x 4,700 mm (82.7 in x 185.0 in) in plan and at most 1,870 mm (73.6 in) in height, without the operating terminal. The terminal is free-standing, 800 mm x 710 mm (31.5 in x 28.0 in) on the floor and 1,500 to 1,700 mm (59.1 to 66.9 in) tall, and DATRON describes its installation site as flexible.
