Overview

The Škoda Machine Tool WP is a portal milling machine of table-type design: two fixed columns stand over a table that carries the workpiece through the portal. The clamping plate is sized to the customer's request, and the maker rates the table for 100 - 250 t according to that plate size. With 4,000 - 10,000 mm (157.5 - 393.7 in) of clearance between the columns, this is a built-to-order machine for large and heavy workpieces.

Table travel in X is assembled from modules, which the specification writes as N x 2,000 mm (78.7 in), and the maker adds that the table travels 1 m further than the plate is long. Overhead, the headstock crosses 5,000 - 11,000 mm (196.9 - 433.1 in) in Y on a cross rail that moves 1,000 - 5,000 mm (39.4 - 196.9 in) vertically as the W axis. Clearance under the spindle is 3,000 - 7,000 mm (118.1 - 275.6 in). Above the moving rail a fixed cross beam ties the columns together, which the maker says reinforces the whole frame. All axes are fully hydrostatic.

Two headstocks are offered, and no other line of the order changes the machine as much. SPEED is the Direct Drive version: 110 kW (147.5 hp), 4,000 rpm and 3,000 Nm (2,213 lb-ft) through one gear range, in a 480 x 480 mm (18.9 x 18.9 in) ram with 2,000 mm (78.7 in) of Z travel. HEAVY has two gear ranges and trades speed for torque, with 103 kW (138.1 hp), 3,000 rpm and 8,400 Nm (6,196 lb-ft) in a 600 x 600 mm (23.6 x 23.6 in) ram that extends 2,500 mm (98.4 in). The maker describes HEAVY as the design for large diameter mills or boring operations.

Milling heads widen what the ram can reach. In the basic version they are kept in pallets and clamp automatically on the ram face; facing and angular heads are standard, and NC controlled heads are optional. An automatic tool changer belongs to the workstation, with a robotic changer as an option, and tool cooling is both external and through the tool. Buyers who would rather keep the workpiece still should look at the WPA, the gantry version, where the columns travel in X instead of the table.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Table load capacity of 100 - 250 t, according to the clamping plate size
  • HEAVY headstock delivers 8,400 Nm (6,196 lb-ft) through two gear ranges in a 600 x 600 mm (23.6 x 23.6 in) ram
  • SPEED headstock is a Direct Drive unit with 110 kW (147.5 hp) and 4,000 rpm
  • All axes are fully hydrostatic, with guideways under telescopic covers
  • Fixed columns joined by a fixed cross beam above the vertically movable cross rail, a frame the maker credits with very high rigidity and accuracy
  • Automatic tool changer included in the workstation; milling heads clamp automatically on the ram face

Limitations

  • The table has to travel 1 m more than the plate length, so the installation is much longer than the part
  • The SPEED headstock is limited to 3,000 Nm (2,213 lb-ft) and a 2,000 mm (78.7 in) ram stroke
  • Choosing HEAVY for torque caps spindle speed at 3,000 rpm
  • NC controlled milling heads and the robotic tool changer are options, not part of the basic version
06

Best For

Large, heavy single workpieces within the 100 - 250 t table rating Parts up to 10,000 mm (393.7 in) wide between the columns Heavy milling and boring with the 8,400 Nm (6,196 lb-ft) HEAVY headstock Faster milling at up to 4,000 rpm with the SPEED headstock

Frequently Asked Questions

01 How is the WP different from the WPA?

The WP is the table-type portal. Its columns are fixed and the workpiece moves through them on a table, with table travel in X of N x 2,000 mm (78.7 in). The WPA is the gantry type: the columns slide in X by N x 2,000 mm (78.7 in) over a stationary clamping area. Both use the same two headstock designs.

02 How much weight can the WP table carry?

The maker states a table load capacity of 100 - 250 t, according to the clamping plate size. The plate itself is sized to the customer's request, and table travel is 1 m longer than the plate length, so load, plate and travel are decided together when the machine is specified.

03 What is the difference between the SPEED and HEAVY headstocks?

SPEED uses Direct Drive with one gear range: 110 kW (147.5 hp), 4,000 rpm, 3,000 Nm (2,213 lb-ft), a 480 x 480 mm (18.9 x 18.9 in) ram and 2,000 mm (78.7 in) of Z. HEAVY has two gear ranges: 103 kW (138.1 hp), 3,000 rpm, 8,400 Nm (6,196 lb-ft), a 600 x 600 mm (23.6 x 23.6 in) ram and 2,500 mm (98.4 in) of Z.

04 How large a workpiece fits under the WP portal?

Clearance between the columns is 4,000 - 10,000 mm (157.5 - 393.7 in) and clearance under the spindle is 3,000 - 7,000 mm (118.1 - 275.6 in), depending on the size ordered. The cross rail adjusts 1,000 - 5,000 mm (39.4 - 196.9 in) in W, and the headstock travels 5,000 - 11,000 mm (196.9 - 433.1 in) in Y.

05 Which milling heads and tool changers does the WP use?

Facing and angular heads are standard and NC controlled heads are optional; special heads can be added on request. In the basic version the heads are stored in pallets and clamp automatically on the ram face. The workstation includes an automatic tool changer, and a robotic tool changer with various magazine sizes is optional.
