Overview
Width is the reason the Johnford DMC-3100P exists. Its columns stand 2,400 mm (94.4 in) apart, Y travel is 2,300 mm (90.5 in), and the table measures 3,200 x 2,050 mm (126 x 80.7 in). X travel is 3,100 mm (122 in) and Z is 800 mm (31.5 in). Johnford calls this group Medium DMC-P, and the 3100P is its shorter 40-taper model.
A table more than two metres wide changes what can be loaded. Large mould bases, bolster plates, sheet-metal die sets and aerospace tooling plates are often closer to square than to long, and they will not pass between the columns of the DMC-3100S, where the gap is 1,796 mm (70.7 in). On the P frame they sit flat with room for clamps.
The frame is heavy for its spindle. Machine weight is 35,000 kg (77,000 lb), and the standard BT-40 / CAT-40 spindle is driven by 7.5 / 11 kW (10.1 / 14.8 hp) through a Hi Lo Gear at 8,000 rpm. Keep the load rating in view: 10,000 kg (22,000 lb), the figure the narrower S models share. A steel die set that fills this table can exceed it. The longer DMC-4100P is rated 13,000 kg (28,600 lb).
