Overview

The AWEA AF-1400II is the longest AF-II vertical machining center that still runs at full speed. It offers 1,400 mm (55.1 in) of X travel with 650 mm (25.6 in) of Y and 610 mm (24.0 in) of Z, and it keeps the 48 m/min (1,890 ipm) X and Y rapids of the shorter machines in its group. One size up, the AF-1600II slows to 36 m/min (1,417 ipm).

Its table is 1,500 x 650 mm (59.1 x 25.6 in), rated for 1,000 kg (2,205 lb). That is the same load as the AF-1250II on a longer table, so the extra length is for reach and for more stations, not for heavier work. Long, narrow parts are the natural fit: rails, manifolds, extrusions, mold plates.

There is a second machine with this X travel. The AF-1400MAX has the same 1,400 mm (55.1 in) of X but 800 mm (31.5 in) of both Y and Z, and weighs 14,000 kg (30,864 lb) against 8,100 kg (17,857 lb) here. The MAX is the heavier, taller, slower machine. The AF-1400II is the choice when the part is long but not deep and cycle time counts.

Standard equipment follows the rest of the series: a direct-drive 12,000 rpm spindle with an 11 / 15 kW (14.8 / 20.1 hp) motor, BT40 with BT50 optional, a 24-tool arm type changer on the column, and the FANUC Oi-MF PLUS control. Listed accuracy is 0.008 mm positioning and 0.006 mm repeatability (ISO230-2). Power requirement is 35 kVA.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 1,400 mm (55.1 in) of X travel while holding 48 m/min (1,890 ipm) rapids in X and Y
  • 1,500 x 650 mm (59.1 x 25.6 in) table with a 1,000 kg (2,205 lb) rating
  • At 8,100 kg (17,857 lb), far lighter to install than the AF-1400MAX with the same X travel
  • BT50 option and a 12,000 rpm direct-drive BT40 spindle as standard
  • 36 m/min (1,417 ipm) Z rapid for quick retracts on long parts with many features

Limitations

  • Y travel of 650 mm (25.6 in) is narrow against 1,400 mm of X; the AF-1400MAX gives 800 mm (31.5 in)
  • Table load does not increase over the AF-1250II despite the longer table
  • Z travel is 610 mm (24.0 in), against 800 mm (31.5 in) on the AF-1400MAX
  • Tools heavier than 7 kg (15 lb) or longer than 250 mm (9.8 in) will not fit the magazine
06

Best For

Long, narrow parts such as rails, manifolds and extrusions Mold plates up to 1,400 x 650 mm Several vises in a row on the 1,500 mm table Production work that needs length without the mass of a MAX machine

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What is the difference between the AF-1400II and the AF-1400MAX?

Both have 1,400 mm (55.1 in) of X travel. The AF-1400II has 650 mm (25.6 in) of Y, 610 mm (24.0 in) of Z, 48 m/min (1,890 ipm) X and Y rapids and weighs 8,100 kg (17,857 lb). The AF-1400MAX has 800 mm (31.5 in) of Y and Z, 30 m/min (1,181 ipm) rapids, a 1,200 kg (2,646 lb) table load and weighs 14,000 kg (30,864 lb).

02 What size table does the AWEA AF-1400II have?

The table is 1,500 x 650 mm (59.1 x 25.6 in) and is rated for 1,000 kg (2,205 lb). It has five T-slots of 18 mm on a 100 mm pitch. The spindle nose can be positioned 125 ~ 735 mm (4.9 ~ 28.9 in) above the table top.

03 What spindle and tool changer does the AF-1400II use?

A direct-drive spindle with 12,000 rpm and an 11 / 15 kW (14.8 / 20.1 hp) motor, BT40 as standard with BT50 as an option. The arm type changer holds 24 tools and is mounted on the column. Maximum tool diameter is Ø75 mm, or Ø150 mm with the adjacent pockets empty.

04 How accurate is the AF-1400II?

AWEA lists positioning accuracy of 0.008 mm and repeatability of 0.006 mm under ISO230-2. The maker describes hand-scraped contact surfaces between column and bed and servo motor mounts cast into the structure, both aimed at keeping the axis system rigid.
