Overview
The Hurco VMX84i-50T is the flagship of Hurco's VMC lineup — the largest travel envelope paired with the most powerful spindle the company offers in a vertical machining center. With 2,134 x 864 x 610 mm (84 x 34 x 24 in) of travel and a CAT 50 spindle, it's built for shops that need to move serious steel across very large workpieces.
The spindle runs 10,000 RPM through a Big Plus CAT 50 taper producing 18.5 kW (25 hp) and 358 Nm (264 ft-lbs) of torque. On an 84-inch machine, that torque is essential — face milling a 3-foot-wide steel mold base with a 5-inch shell mill requires sustained torque that a 40-taper can't deliver. The Big Plus dual-contact interface adds rigidity at the spindle nose, which is critical when running large-diameter inserted cutters.
Table dimensions are 2,134 x 864 mm (84 x 34 in) with a 3,500 kg (7,716 lb) max load. The 84x34-inch table with 3.5-ton capacity handles serious iron. The 40-tool ATC manages CAT 50 toolholders, though at this machine size, some shops add a second tool storage unit for extended unattended operation.
Construction follows the hybrid guide design — roller guides on X and Y, box way on Z. Rapids are 27 m/min (1,063 ipm) on X, 24 m/min (945 ipm) on Y, and 22 m/min (866 ipm) on Z. These are slower than the 40-taper version due to the heavier spindle head, but for the applications this machine serves, rapid traverse speed is rarely the cycle time bottleneck.
At approximately 14,000 kg (30,865 lb), the VMX84i-50T is a 15-ton machine that requires professional installation planning. Foundation design, floor loading, rigging access, and utility connections all need to be engineered before the machine arrives. WinMax control is standard, though at this level, most programming is done in CAM.
Pricing runs $220,000-$280,000 new. Used machines are rare in the secondary market. When available, 2016-2021 models trade in the $140,000-$200,000 range. This machine competes with large-format VMCs from Mazak, Okuma, and Johnford.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- Largest travel envelope in Hurco's VMC lineup at 84x34x24" handles the biggest workpieces
- CAT 50 spindle with 358 Nm torque enables aggressive roughing across the massive work envelope
- 3,500 kg table load supports the heaviest steel and cast iron workpieces
- 14,000 kg machine weight provides outstanding stability for heavy cutting
- 610 mm (24 in) Z-travel accommodates tall workpieces and deep fixtures
- WinMax control adds programming flexibility not found on most machines at this size
Limitations
- 10,000 RPM limit makes small-diameter endmill work in aluminum inefficient
- 14,000 kg weight requires engineered foundation and professional rigging for installation
- Massive footprint — plan for 7+ meters in X direction including access space
- CAT 50 tooling costs add up significantly with a 40-tool magazine to fill
- $220-280K is a significant investment that competes with more established large-format builders
- Rare on the used market, limiting resale options

Frequently Asked Questions
01
New base price starts around $220,000. Fully configured with through-spindle coolant, probing, chip conveyor, thermal compensation, and options, expect $250,000-$280,000. Used machines are rare but trade in the $140,000-$200,000 range when available.
02
The 50T adds a CAT 50 spindle with 70% more torque (264 vs 157 ft-lbs), 7 more horsepower (25 vs 18 hp), and 500 kg more table load. It's 1,000 kg heavier and $20-30K more expensive. The 40-taper version is better for aluminum; the 50T is for steel, cast iron, and tough materials.
03
At 14,000 kg, you need an engineered concrete foundation (minimum 12-inch reinforced), adequate floor loading capacity, rigging access for delivery, 480V 3-phase power, compressed air, and chip management infrastructure. Plan 3-6 months ahead with Hurco's installation team.
04
For most job shop and mold work, yes. The 358 Nm of torque is more important than peak horsepower for the interrupted cuts and face milling typical on a machine this size. For continuous heavy hogging, some shops wish for 30-40 hp, which requires looking at other builders.
05
The Mazak VTC-800/30SR, Okuma MCR-A5C, and Johnford DMC-2100 are in a similar class. Bridge and gantry mills from Haas (GR series) and others also compete at this travel range. The Hurco's unique advantage is WinMax conversational programming, which none of these competitors offer.
