Overview

The Pinnacle DW1422 is the three-axis machine on Pinnacle's DU series page: a double column machining center with 2,200 mm (86.6 in) of X, 1,400 mm (55.1 in) of Y and a vertical stroke split between two axes. Z moves 600 mm (23.6 in), and a separate W axis adds 900 mm (35.4 in).

That split is what sets it apart from Pinnacle's DV machines. The table lists the spindle nose to table distance as 130~1,630(Max) mm (5.1~64.2(Max) in), against 160~1,060 mm (6.3~41.7 in) on the DV1422, so tall weldments, housings and stacked fixtures fit under the spindle.

The spindle is ISO 50 at 8,000 rpm with 15/18.5 kW (20.1/24.8 hp) and 95.4/117.7 Nm (70.4/86.8 lb-ft), continuous and S6 60% ratings, and a tool pulling force of 1,800 kgf. It takes far heavier tooling than its page-mate: 25 kg (55 lb) and 400 mm (15.7 in) per tool here, against 8 kg (18 lb) and 300 mm (11.8 in) on the DU1412.

The 2,200x1,200 mm (86.6x47.2 in) table carries 5,000 kg (11,023 lb) and has T-slots listed as 22x150x7. Standard accessories named for the DW1422 include a Heidenhain TNC640 controller, linear scales on 3 axes, a 24T arm type ATC, coolant through the ballscrews, and both screw and chain type chip conveyors. Rapids are 20/20/20 m/min. Machine weight, floor space and power requirement are not in Pinnacle's table.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Z of 600 mm (23.6 in) plus a 900 mm (35.4 in) W axis gives up to 1,630 mm (64.2 in) between spindle nose and table
  • ISO 50 spindle with 95.4/117.7 Nm (70.4/86.8 lb-ft) and 15/18.5 kW (20.1/24.8 hp)
  • Takes tools up to 25 kg (55 lb) and 400 mm (15.7 in) long, with diameters listed as Ø125/Ø250 mm (Ø4.9/Ø9.8 in)
  • Linear scales on 3 axes and a Heidenhain TNC640 controller are on the standard accessories list
  • 5,000 kg (11,023 lb) table load on a 2,200x1,200 mm (86.6x47.2 in) table

Limitations

  • Top speed is 8,000 rpm, so small-tool finishing is slower than on the 15,000 rpm DU1412
  • Z itself is only 600 mm (23.6 in); deeper reach depends on where the W axis is set
  • No machine weight, floor space or power requirement in Pinnacle's table
  • Magazine capacity is printed as 24/32(60), and only the 24T ATC is named as standard

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What is the W axis on the Pinnacle DW1422?

It is a second travel in the vertical direction. Pinnacle's table lists a W travel of 900 mm (35.4 in) in addition to a Z travel of 600 mm (23.6 in), and gives the spindle nose to table distance as 130~1,630(Max) mm (5.1~64.2(Max) in). The DU1412 on the same page has no W axis.

02 Is the DW1422 a five-axis machine?

No. It is the three-axis machine of the pair on this page; the DU1412 is the five-axis one. The rotary table and tilting axis rows of the table are empty for the DW1422, and its accuracy rows give only the linear figures: 0.005 mm positioning and 0.003 mm repeatability.

03 What spindle does the DW1422 have?

An ISO 50 spindle with a Ø90 mm (Ø3.5 in) inside diameter, 8,000 rpm, and a motor rated 15/18.5 kW (20.1/24.8 hp) continuous and S6 60%. Motor torque is 95.4/117.7 Nm (70.4/86.8 lb-ft) and the tool pulling force is 1,800 kgf. A spindle oil cooler and air blast through the spindle are standard accessories.

04 How many tools does the DW1422 hold?

The standard accessories list names a 24T arm type ATC. The table gives capacity as 24/32(60) under a DISK/CHAIN magazine heading, with a maximum tool diameter of Ø125/Ø250 mm (Ø4.9/Ø9.8 in), a length of 400 mm (15.7 in) and a weight of 25 kg (55 lb).
