Overview

The Hartford PRO-1000 is a box-guideway vertical machining center with a #40 spindle, 1,000 mm (39.4 in) of X travel, 600 mm (23.6 in) of Y and 630 mm (24.8 in) of Z. Hartford names the line Power Center and aims it at what it calls small but heavy cutting workpieces.

Box ways are the reason to look at this machine instead of the linear-guide LG-1000, which has the same X and Z strokes. The PRO-1000 also has more Y than the LG-1000, 600 mm (23.6 in) against 510 mm (20.1 in), and a deeper 1,150 x 600 mm (45.3 x 23.6 in) table. Table load is the same 700 kg (1,543 lb).

The spindle list confirms the intent. Next to the pulley spindle at 8,000 / 10,000 / 12,000 rpm there is a gear-head spindle at 6,000 / 8,000 rpm, and no direct-drive option at all. Hartford says both the gear-type and pulley-type #40 spindles are 100% self-made. Motors are 5.5 / 7.5 kW, optionally 7.5 / 11 kW (Cont. / 30 min).

Two tool changers are listed: an arm type with 24 pockets (30 in brackets) and a 16-tool S type. The structure has a one-piece spindle housing, an extra-large column, a widened fastening surface on the base, and servo motors coupled directly to the ballscrews. An oil/fluid separation device is available to extend the life of the cutting fluid.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Box guideways on all axes with a 600 mm (23.6 in) Y stroke
  • Gear-head spindle option at 6,000 / 8,000 rpm for low-speed cutting, beside the 8,000 / 10,000 / 12,000 rpm pulley spindle
  • 1,150 x 600 mm (45.3 x 23.6 in) table, deeper than the LG-1000's
  • One-piece spindle housing and extra-large column, per Hartford's description
  • Choice of a 24 (30) tool arm-type changer or a 16-tool S-type changer

Limitations

  • No direct-drive spindle is listed and the top speed is 12,000 rpm
  • The largest spindle motor is 7.5 / 11 kW (Cont. / 30 min), modest for a machine sold on heavy cutting
  • The spindle nose is #40; Hartford's #50 box-way machines are in the HCMC line
  • Table load is 700 kg (1,543 lb), no more than the linear-guide LG-1000
06

Best For

Steel and cast-iron parts that benefit from box-way damping Low-speed, high-torque cuts using the gear-head spindle Compact mould and die components up to 600 mm (23.6 in) deep Shops that prefer box ways for interrupted cutting

Frequently Asked Questions

01 Is the Hartford PRO-1000 a box-way or linear-guide machine?

Box-way. Hartford lists it as a Vertical Machining Center (Box guideway). The LG-1000, with the same 1,000 mm (39.4 in) X travel, is the linear-guideway alternative in Hartford's range.

02 What spindles are offered on the PRO-1000?

A pulley-head spindle at 8,000 / 10,000 / 12,000 rpm and a gear-head spindle at 6,000 / 8,000 rpm, both on a #40 nose. The motor is 5.5 / 7.5 kW with 7.5 / 11 kW as the option (Cont. / 30 min). Tool shanks are BT40, with BBT, CAT and DIN as alternatives.

03 What are the PRO-1000 travels and table size?

X is 1,000 mm (39.4 in), Y is 600 mm (23.6 in) and Z is 630 mm (24.8 in). The table measures 1,150 x 600 mm (45.3 x 23.6 in) and carries an average load of 700 kg (1,543 lb).

04 Which tool changers can the PRO-1000 be ordered with?

The ATC row reads A: 24 (30) S: 16 pcs. That is an arm-type changer with 24 pockets, or 30, and an S-type changer with 16 pockets. Tool size and weight limits are not given on the product page.
